Once all that is done it was a fun car (still very heavy) but in stock form the damn thing was about as vanilla as it gets with no real character.

I crossed shopped an S3 with the M3 but in the end the M3 is a way sharper, more potent car. If you like to race people at stop lights in the rain then sure the Audi would be a better car, but you're comparing a FWD based Haldex fake quattro system with a properly sorted RWD sports car. I also felt it I was to buy the S3, it was such a lateral move from the S4 that it didn't make any sense to switch cars in the first place.
The M3 is for sure the more raw and exciting car. However, cross shopping the two is just not ideal. I mean, the S3/S4 isn't meant to be a track bitch, it's meant to be a fun, comfortable, and capable daily.

Plus for $370 you can buy a plug-n-play JB1 piggyback that makes the car run low 12s @110-114, all else being stock. The FWD biased Haldex is actually quite good. The handling is great and I love the steering. Fun car, but doesn't hold a candle to the F80/82.
