That's why I believe a designation like "997" is the true model name, but they kept the "911" name for historical and marketing purposes.

Great point, the 944 is one that I think EVERYONE recognizes as being the term referenced for that model, not the 911. I never heard anyone say they had a 911 to describe their 944.
