I found the Blue Ridge Pkwy to be too congested for spirited driving. I think you can try it for a few miles, but I found it tedious. Your experience may be different. I stayed at the Biltmore in Asheville, then went over into Tennessee, then made it up to I-81. Then, since I'm in the Albany NY area, I spent a night in Hershey, PA, before finishing the trek up to Albany.

I think you take I-81 until you must go East. The earlier you get East, the more congested the roads will be. I also agree that you have to watch yourself in VA.
