I had the same problem. Turns out I didn't fully tighten down the speaker to the speaker box. On both boxes, one screw SEEMED to be seated fully but it wasn't. That screw, on both boxes, made a load crack noise when I fully tightened it. I searched for cracks in the box but didn't find anything. Weird. I initially thought it was the cover also.
