This is fully explained in the manual if you buy the BMW branded CTEK charger from a dealer.


With the trunk open you will also have the trunk light burning for some time.
You also dont have to leave the hood fully up all the time if you place the clamps and cables correctly
Why does it matter if the ground is connected to the battery or the body? Modern cars are common ground so the entire body is connected to the negative terminal through a ground strap so I don't see how this would have an impact.
