I took the liberty to move this thread to m3post.

On the subject, I haven't found anybody being able to confirm this. So, it's either 'top secret' or not going to happen.

What I've learned though is that BMW M has tested an AWD system some years ago. The idea was to have an AWD with the ability of a 100% rear bias, coupled with an 'OFF switch'. That way, owners would have the best of both worlds, the added traction of AWD when needed and the trademark RWD behaviour and excitement, all by the touch of a button (e.g. for track days). As every AWD system, it would have added weight.

Anyway, this M AWD never was green-lighted, or so I was told. Also, the possible introduction of the X3 M speaks against an AWD M3.

Personally, if anything, I'd expect some form of KERS with the I6 engine being routed to the rear in a traditional way and the e-motors powering the front wheels. But, that's VED technology and probably too costly for the M3.

Best regards,
south
