I understand, looking at performance numbers, that these 2 are comparable. That's about where it ends. Don't get me wrong I love BMWs and have a great appreciation for the M Division but when it comes to refinement and being a true luxury sports car, I would have to say Porsche wins (of course this comes at a premium price).

Mind you the m3 and the backseats of the m4 are far more useable (also trunk space is better) but a 911 is a wonderful daily driver. After sitting in the new m3 this past weekend I can say that although much of the interior is an improvement over the e9xs the build quality of my 997 interior was nicer (IMHO). I also enjoyed the drive/feel of my car more (how I miss the hydrolic steering of the e9xs) and is part of the reason I did not go with a 991 (waiting to see what improvements come with the 991.2).

As mentioned before and as it as always been the m3/m4 give you a lot of performance for the money (especially given the steep prices of the new 991). But Porsche is not just about performance figures (plus we are talking about the base model) and if that is what you are after they do provide a few options for you to choose from (if you want a track fiend find a GT2/3 or for straight line speed a Turbo S). I don't imagine many 911 owners are looking over at an m3/m4 wishing that was their car (though I hope like me they can appreciate the car for what it is). But I dare say there will be a good few m3/m4 owners that pull up next to a 911 wishing they were driving that instead.
