My Mineral Grey F80 has the same problem as the OP. The primer is a noticeably lighter color than the paint, so every little chip is obvious. I've done clear bra on the entire front bumper, hood, mirrors, rockers, and added custom-cut strips just behind the wheels at all four corners, and to the lower edges of the doors to minimize the shotgun blast effects. I also added pieces of 3M clear bra just above the rear wheel arches where I noticed the damage at first. I'm at 16K miles now and it won't get much worse, but it all stems from the way the fenders and rear bumper curve in behind the wheels, as well as the sticky nature of the tires -- they just throw a lot of stones.
I'd love to get a set of subtle mudflaps to cure the problem, but that's not the most aesthetically appealing solution.
