BMW put a piece of clear protection in this specific area because they know of this problem. Its the only place they put paint protection . However they didnt cover enough area....

Exactly. When my car was in for paint work after vandalism, I had them bring in an Xpel guy to extend the clear protection. You can barely make it out but the edge of it runs almost vertically near the bright reflection in the paint. It covers the whole area that had rock chips and is less visible than the original clear plastic which had already begun to yellow after one year for me. Really happy with how this turned out and the peace of mind it has provided.
