I don't think BMW is going to change the engine in regards to the upcoming M3 just for the M4. The M4 is bound to be a tad bit lighter, but it'll most likely make the same amount of power.
The M5 and M6 are a good example of this. They're completely different models, but have the same (roughly) performance figures.
But of course, everything is speculation right now. I'm going off a limb and what BMW have done in the past (E92/E90, E36).
