You do not have to buy an extended warranty until the original factory one expires. You can keep the car until before the 4yr/50k expiration, then decide if you want to buy one or trade the car in. It does not get more expensive the longer you wait. The only reason to get it now is that you can roll it into the car payments.

The price of a factory extended warranty is negotiable. Do not pay retail.

Also, if you have an extended warranty and sell the car (or total it) before your extended warranty expires, you can get a prorated refund.
