I myself find it odd, that in 2014 BMW is not making rear sub-frames out of Aluminium As far as i know, no other manufacture is rocking this set up. Its either expensive chunk of Aluminium or hard to mold, weld together
The interview says it's a space consideration:

Aluminum, being a weaker raw material than steel, requires more material to deliver the same strength.
