Pretty much every other vehicle manufacturer has done a better job of interfacing phones with in-car entertainment systems than BMW has.

I read somewhere that BMW's official position on this issue and other similar interface issues were due to the phone manufacturers not adhering to Bluetooth standards.

My car was just in for service and everytime it goes in I complain about Bluetooth connectivity. This time, the dealer tells me that BMW has admitted there is an issue and is working on a software update to address and that I should wait until the car is in again. Not holding my breath, but must admit that I am utterly disappointed in this aspect of both my X5 and M4. Everytime I rent a car, it grinds salt into the wound when my phone works flawlessly with the rental's infotainment system.
