There is absolutely no reason to test a non-M engine in an M car. It makes no sense at all. But if you do believe they would do that for some reason, then that could just as easily mean that this V6 you think you are hearing could be a future generation series engine as well.

Well maybe he did get fired.

Or, more likely, the picture was simply taken by a clever spy while the test crew was in the middle of inspecting something under the hood but had stepped away for a moment. And BMW probably would not particularly care since, assuming the engine is an I6 as most everyone is convinced of by now, it is no big secret to keep anyway.
