I have a buddy who told me he got to spend some time with some M engineers a while back, and that ~400 BHP is about all RWD can really handle. My F80 ZCP definitely has trouble putting all of the power down (although my understanding is that this has gotten better over time with the F80/82).

Unless they find a way to drastically reduce weight, it's just a lot easier to add more power and AWD. We shall see...
