Can the S55 motor be over filled with oil?

My E36 M3 was able to take an additional quart of oil. Does the S55 have this capacity?

Reason I ask is I think the dealer over filled it when they did the 1300 mile service. The back bumper has little oil spots and soot that it never had before with 3k on clock. When I check the oil through the computer, it shows full, so it doesn't seem to be burning off.

Will it hurt this motor? Or will it burn off and be fine?

The car doesn't have a dip stick, but would like to know if there is another way to check the oil besides the computer?

After the the 1300 mile service, I installed a Burger Stage 1 and K&N Filters. Don't think this would hurt anything, but just figure would mention.

Thanks for any suggestions

The computer would alert you if it was too full.

Didn't realize that. Thanks for the info.

Still confused as to why the back bumper would be getting nasty out of no where.

The black spots is soot. This is completely normal for an direct fuel injected engine.

FYI, M Service is at 1200 miles, not 1300 miles. Not saying it will make any difference, but let's use the correct mileage so as not to cause any confusion.

The car never had it before. I used to get just a fine dust that I would see on the top of the bumper near the deck lid, but now its more noticeable.

Thanks for the feed back

Weird; my M3 has been good on oil. It has dropped a little between changes, at least according to the computer when I checked, but no need to top off between changes.

Our prior F10 550i, on the other hand, needed a quart easily every 1000 miles. A buddy of mine just picked up a CPO F10 M5 with only 18K on the clock, and it similarly uses about a quart every 1000 miles.

My driving habits/commute have not changed, so it is a car thing. What was really annoying was when BMW stopped doing the complimentary oil top-offs for the 550i. It's hilarious that they pat themselves on the back for changing the wiper blades every time you bring the car in for anything, but they wouldn't top off the oil in a brand new car that burned it.

keep pressing them. it is normal for an m engine to burn up to 2 quarts every 750 miles. or something like that. i've got 5500 miles, done 2 oil changes, a bucket of track days and not once have i had to add oil.

you may have a problem, you may not. but if you keep it up, have them document it, they may dig in and find a burnt ring or something. i've seen it before, not common, but it can happen.

No way is a quart every 1000 miles normal.

I have 26,000 miles on mine, I drive pretty aggressive, not redlining all the time, but aggressive and I have not burned a drop of oil ever.

I did not need oil from 1200 mile to 10k mile service.

I drive it conservatively 95% and like I stole it 5% of the time. I never let the engine run at constant rpm for long. DCT makes it easy.

during break in, you need cylinder pressure to help seal the rings. hit it hard

This likely has nothing to do with the oil level in your engine. Even if it did the engine would be burning the oil and it be smoking more than making little black spots.

It's much more likely soot from the exhaust. It takes a little time for soot to build up and line the length of the shiny new exhaust pipes, probably about 4-5K miles. Now that it has it will blow out with any moisture in the exhaust and end up on the back bumper. This is normal.

I'm with you, no way is that normal. Over 25 years I have had a lot of cars, many that saw 30K miles a year in commutor miles, and I have never added a quart of oil between oil changes.

when an engine burns 1 quart every 1k miles, its due to low tension of the piston rings whereby oil passes by....The likely cause is due to a an engine being "babied" during the breakin period and not driven hard enough to seat the rings properly

Bingo. Improper ring-seating, folks!
