Well that's good news.
I hope afterall that the repsonsible people at M will eventually also admit the necessity of bringing a F8whatsover in a touring version.
Many potential clients have been waiting too long for this version.....over so many E3....E4.....and E9.... modells.
Hey M responsibles.....thanks for reading this and please pay it the attention it deserves

If it's true, it's good, but I could care less about what the model number is.

Some of you on here have to respect the fact that some people are truly disappointed by the "M4" thing. M3 is a tradition, M3 is a brand, M3 is a lifestyle. People who buy these cars know the history behind it and cherish it. Why do you think rarely people with M3's do not debadge? Because that badge on the back represents the history of the brand. To switch it and theoretically kill the brand is a disrespect to some BMW enthusiast.

People who have M3 coupes represent the pure culture of BMW. the people who have M4 coupes represent the transition of the brand.

The current generation M3 is so far removed from its heritage that changing the naming conventions is not of concern to me.

If you are buying an M3 in order to buy into a 'lifestyle' , 'brand', or a 'badge', then you have much bigger problems at hand.

True, but they are still sedans. I probably missed a couple more potential 1 series variations though, such as a little FWD hatchlet and perhaps an MPV-like trucklet thing-a-ma-bob.

SCOTT -

Why no F81 M3 touring? Seems to me that with Germany being such a hotbed for wagon sales, this would be a no-brainer. I will point out that Audi's flagship RS4 model is a touring first, sedan second (and their quite possibly won't even be a sedan version of the car this coming generation).

Well, I guess since I have two M3's currently and both are Sedans I am basically committed to the F80 M3 (if that is indeed what it will be called).

To me personally it doesn't matter what the name of the car is. Also my next car would be a e92 M3 anyway because the new M4's will be too expensive for me to get anytime soon. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion.

To me a car is not defined by it's badge but to some people it is and I understand both sides of the spectrum.

e92 M3 FTW

if BMW comes out w/ the M4...i won't judge a book by its cover, or in this case its M4 name, but something about it just doesn't seem right. I might as well just opt for the e92 M3 since it will be the last NA M3 for now and cheaper to buy used than when the F series 3 comes out

Who cares the m3 is dead anyways (turbo+bigger) they can call it whatever they want. The m3 is entering the legend just like elvis. This m4 has nothing to do with previous m3s.

A BIG part of shelling all the money to buy a BMW M3 is because of the brand, ur just lying to yourself if u say otherwise. Like how i would spend 2-3x more to buy an Audemars vs a Panerai/Rolex. It has more performance, it's faster, better value...oh wait insert - it's still a Nissan comment. :-\

Great news about the sedan. That will most likely be my next car, possibly in 2014 / 2015. Tri-turbo with lots of tuning potential and the practicality of having the understated 4-door-version, perfect for me.

I just wonder where Alpina will fit in with all this.

I remember in a thread not too long ago, when I mentioned something along these lines being shot down.

Loving that BMW will continue the M3 Sedan line.

For those hung up on names and badges and what not, of course you have the right to express your thoughts and concerns and the like. Similarly BMW will go with what they want at the end of the day, but the 1M Coupe is proof that BMW have the same kind of hang ups as as many of you.

Me, a name is just useful to help understand where a vehicle fits in a line up. I think I could cope with the M3-> M4 naming transition.

It goes without saying that BMW will take the opportunity to mark the coupe up ($) even further than the sedan with a name split.

As has already been stated the very first M3 was a sedan. The 'tradition' and 'heritage' of the M3 badge will not be lost because there will still be an M3 for you to buy if you wish. If you want a coupe then get the M4. If it really concerns you that no one will have heard of your 'M4' when you mention it at work then you are just a badge whore. All true enthusiasts buy cars because of the way they drive and make you feel - the name of the car is irrelevant. I think i'll have an M3 please.

If it's that serious why not debadge the coupe, or debadge and buy a M3 badge and put it on!

I do understand why some of you are really upset though....

I will choose your post, but really I could choose any of the posts of the condescending tone and name calling. You should take a second and read and digest what people are saying before calling them "badge whores" because it makes you look ignorant when you do so. Many of the so called "badge whores" may have owned more ///Ms then you can count, including the earlier e30. Additionally, many of us are not "badge whores" but believe in tradition and history, and realize that the badge represents a storied history of passion and success, qualities people want to be reminded of. Yes, we (well at least I do) buy the car for what it can do, that doesn't mean we can enjoy other things about the car.

It's like if you changed the name from 911 to 915 or Gt3 to Gt4.....the badges and names of these cars represent history, passion and a standard and some of us know, respect and love that history and passion. That is why these "badges" like the "///M3" badge mean so much.

So before shooting off and attacking people as "badge whores" how about you just state you don't believe in the name is that important and move on, it's your opinion, it's not fact, an no one has labeled you because your opinion is different then ours,

Cheers,

Don't like the M4 Badge idea. Not a good idea changing a legacy....,

Firstly thank you for ' choosing' my post. Please let me address the points you made in your post.

1. Your first paragraph explains why the M3 badge means so much to so many enthusiasts and i agree entirely - i never stated that everyone who felt this way was a badge whore - my point was that the type of person who would not buy an M4 just because it was not badged M3 and no one will have heard of it is a badge whore.......how can you argue with that? I never said that everyone who is expressing their opinion on wanting to keep the M3 moniker on the coupe is a badge whore.

2. All of us realise the tradition and history behind the M3 - you are talking like the M3 badge is going to be dropped....it isnt, there will still be an M3.

3. So before 'shooting off' and jumping to the defence of people that are not even being 'attacked' - read into the post.

Cheers

Er...

Isn't this a carbon copy of the story that came out right after the E46 production run ended? $10 says the coupe remains the "M3."

Paypal, anyone?
