If Nissan can make a killer v6 twin turbo for the gtr, then I bet BMW won't disappoint if this is surely a v6.

The one thing that I'm confused about is the fact that it's suppose to be lighter then the e9x gen but it's going to be bigger then the e9x gen. How is that possible? Carbon Fiber mirrors? Doors? bumpers? That's going to push the MSRP up by a significant amount, and with the way BMW is going, I thought the whole point was to become the next Toyota.

I'd be floored if BMW gave up on the inherent balance of an I6. I'm betting on a twin-turbo I6 or an innovative tri-turbo I6. Both of those can do 450hp. Or more.

Well the new engine will roughly still around 3L - 3.2L at the most. Its power potential would be similar to the current N54/N55. Why would it be different?


But I think it sounds like crap, like a mid-90s V6 American "sporty" coupe (think Beretta or lots of Pontiacs). V6's can be made to sound incredible (listen to an NSX if you don't believe me) but not this one.

i actually think it sounds pretty good for a stock exhaust. akrapovic on this will hands down be the best exhaust yet again for the car. i bet bmw will release alot of performance parts similar to the crt car for the f80.

Amidst all of the speculation, I am fairly certain that the producation car will not sound like that. It's a test mule! BMW goes through great lengths to "tune" the sound of the exhaust.

Actually, when you look at the angles of the cylinder banks in V configurations, the V8 is a balanced proposition while the V6 is not. I was not floored when the E9x M3 came out with a stellar V8 as BMW has been building fantastic 8 cylinders for years.

The V6 is certainly more compact from a packaging standpoint, that's why FWD cars adopted it back in the day.

In the end, if anyone can build a fantastic engine, it's BMW. And I will still be surprised by them abandoning the balance and expertise they have in the I6. A larger displacement, updated twin turbo I6 with a lighter overall body weight would suit the next M3. While a 3.5L V6 is eluded to above, I'll still have to wait and see. In the era of FWD BMWs and the loss of steering feel for 1mpg in the F25 and F10, I'm open to surprises from the blue and white propeller.

Not impressed with the sound! Current M3 sounds way better! I also feel the current M3 looks more agressive (specially the front hood). Anyone else feel like this?

Not me! I can't accurately assess a vehicle that isn't finished yet. Do you remember how the E9X test mules looked?

I was in Garching earlier this week and saw this same car as well as what I think was the M6 prototype. Wasn't able to get close enough to either for sound unfortunately.
