M4 engines?? other upgrades..

Gents,

I'm thinking that since BMW will offer M4 instead of M3 sedan and coupe there will be differences more than skin deep or cosmetic. I speculate that since many cars now meet or exceed the M3 in performance numbers that is putting pressure on BMW to offer the M4 to continue to lead the pack so to speak. Agreed that few cars can offer the all round ability of the M3 but sometimes pure numbers can pull sales.

If so, what will M4 offer?

7 spd manual tranny?
higher horsepower TTT V6?
TT V8 from M6, etc.

I'd love to read your thoughts on this topic and other potential enhancements BMW would make to "up" the M4's game. I will add that most likely the M4 will cost maybe 5-10K more than M3.

No disrespect to future M3, jusr reasoning the name change for the coupe to M4.

Scott, any thoughts?

Thanks.

More HP is possible. It is very likely M6 will get more HP than M5. Also this time there should be again an M4 CSL. But M3 CSL (E92) is also coming.

You've been saying this for nearly two years now, Levi (though I suppose even a broken clock is right twice a day).

It's getting late in the E92's life to be introducing a new model, isn't it? And where it will it slot in relative to the GTS or the CRT?

This thread sums up what is wrong with Americans. You think bigger number = better and fast car.

+1 I think the GTS is current M3's CSL.

As for the next M3 coupe. I say V4 with 2 small turbo feeding one big turbo making good use of all those pressure and heat! Hello turbo lag!

V4 because BMW just want to make money and chop current M5's V8 the wrong way in half in persuit of making more profit and used a cardboard to separate the v8 engine die for their casting process. So who's with me? LOL

But seriously, the next M3 coupe is so far away. I say we should wait and see whats offered with the X3M before we have something more concrete to speculate on.

But there in is the issue, If BMW seeks to make a seperate M4 rather than than M3 sedan/coupe how will BMW seperate the two? I see the M2 being the lighter M, while the M4 leans towards GT/Sport. With that, trying to command a higher price. Since the M6 has grown into a more executive type heavier/longer GT/touring the M4 moves up a little. Having said that BMW must offer reasons to justify a more exspensive M4. Thus I speculate they will offer a more powerful M4 engine and other goodies.

It's not going to run a 4-banger (and the V8 is gone due to fuel consumption, see M5/6's move from V10 to V8 TT). Some decent intel out there that it will likely be a turbo'd 6-zylinder' maybe ~ 330 Kw (450 hp).

Hence, to make the M4 special enough has to run a 6.

Totally agree. I want lighter and smarter; precise steering; 6-piston brakes.
