Performance f80 vs f82?

Choosing between E92 and e90 M3 was mostly a preference on 2 doors vs 4 doors. The platforms were very similar. The f80 and f82 platforms seem to be so different. Does anyone believe BMW would make the Performance between the 2 models so different that one might be significantly faster and handle better than the other?

Probably not. The closest comparison you could use is the M5 and M6GC, both offer pretty much the same performance. The 3 and 4-Series are pretty much the same so I don't think the M3/M4 would differ in performance.

I was wondering, not in terms of differences between the F80 and F82 but power differences within M mode. Do you think the M button will mimick that of the e9X and just alter settings slightly? Or do you think it will be more like the e60 M5 and switch from a map of say, 8psi to 14psi or what have you, giving you ~350 hp and then 450 hp.

It could be a possibility that the M4 may be slightly sportier as the M6 is slightly sportier than the M5 such as through the corners and being faster around the track. But that's just a theory since the 4 series is suppose to be a much better handling car than the F30 3er.

Exclamation Crazy

That would be the final destruction of the M3 name and equity; make the M4 faster than the M3...

I suspect that objectively it will be slightly faster, but us mere mortals would never exploit that difference. Maybe if the M4 weighs 100lbs less but I doubt.

I actually think the M4 will be the high end coupe everyone has been wanting while the F80 will be a tamer version. A smaller M5 lets say but lighter too.

I have no evidence other than BMW really spent big on the M6 compared to the M5 and the M5 continues down a different path.

I just cannot see how the car gets lighter by all the claimed experts when BMW carbon fiber technology is a long way away.

Only way I see it is an aluminium frame like Jag but that totally changes the way the car is built and I cant see that changing either.

I think it depends on the pricing difference. If it is just like $2k-3k more than the M3, then I doubt the M4 will be much faster (other than the slight weight difference). If it is more like a $5k-10K difference, then yes I think that BMW will have to make the M4 faster to justify the cost difference.

Agree that the M4 will likely have a small edge in weight and suspension dynamics to improve its lap time (ala M5 vs. M6), but the engines will be identical (maybe slight tune variation with the turbos).

We already know the M3/4 will be lighter and more powerful than the current E9x, and from the looks of the 4 series concept, an amazing design evolution. The outlook is extremely positive for the M3/M4 variants.

My only concern is turbo lag in the new 6 cyl. FI engine, M will have to deliver magic in this respect. I've driven a X6M and it has lag without a doubt.

i drive the M3 sedan. what ive read from people who have driven both is they give the handling ever so slight to the sedan but almost identical. id think the next generation will be the same. hopefully with lots more HP and quickness off the line. it must be a sub 4 second like 3.7 or better for me to get the next generation.

Have driven both M3 coupes and M3 sedans around VIR as fast as I could (BMW 2-day Advanced M-School ... and going back this Spring). If there's a difference between the two it's too subtle for this hacker to detect.

Now the comparo between the 'old' M3 and the new M5 (recently at Spartanburg) ... old M3 wins by a mile. Comng off lease on my 335i in 2015 is going to be fun. 335i? 4-series? M3? Life is sweet.

Given the naming variance compared to previous generations, my bet is the M4 will outperform the M3 to reflect its place between the M3 and M5. It is being marketed, at least in my opinion, as a sportier and slightly higher end model. I don't think it will way better but my bet is slightly better.... maybe a 7:49 vs a 7:54 Nurburgring time
