Is the F80 M3 a supercar?

Hello fellow M3 owners. I am currently debating with someone. He claims that the F80 M3 is a Supercar and i think its more of a Luxury Sports Sedan.

His argument is that in 1989 the Skyline GTR made the cover of many magazines that classified it as a Supercar. He doesn't like modded M3's that are lowered or stanced and thinks they should be left stock. In his defense he owns a Beautiful Jahre M3. So i could see why he would consider an F80 M3 a supercar.

What do you guys think

Not a supercar. A fast sports sedan, but not a supercar.

A 911 Turbo is a borderline supercar. Anything below it is not, IMO.

Nope. If it was released as is 20 years ago it would be a supper car. I also wouldnt classify it as a "luxury" sports sedan. Its a sports sedan, albite the best one in the world.

I agree with everyone else, no it is not a supercar. A great sports sedan yes, but a supercar is (or is close to) what Mclaren and Ferrari build, not anything BMW currently builds.

I would call an i8 a supercar far far before I would call anything else that BMW makes a supercar.

Actually the i8 is considered a supercar i looked it up

but so far no hope for the F80's ill keep looking

I classify it as a luxury sport sedan - IMO the best one on the market (in large part because it can be purchased with a 6-speed).

BMW doesn't currently produce anything I consider a supercar, not even the i8.

I checked wikipedia expecting to be able to close the thread, but it may not be so clear cut. It is actually interesting to read the history behind the term:

Perhaps if the individual who is classifying his M3 as a "supercar" is old enough to have been raised in the 60s, I could see where he is coming from. From an old school mindset, there is some argument. If not, then yeah, he's more than likely just blinded by ego.

In any case, by the modern definition of the word, the M3 isn't really even in the ballpark.

Your friend is an idiot. To most non-enthusiast an M3 is still a glorified 3-series. Even a Tesla Model S P100D which is blistering fast isn't a supercar. Supercars should be reserved as the top 1% of cars in price, performance and exclusivity of a specific era.
