Traditions are meant to be broken. Besides, a well designed AWD will make any car monstrously good on the track. R8, Gallardo, GT2 RS, GT-R... And so on. The only thing that suffers is mileage and weight. The latter... Well... ///M's have been going a little chubby anyways...

The way I see it though, most car companies have sold out because well, the argument is they have to change with the times.

e.g. Porsche now has a SUV and a 4-door sedan. Ferrari and Porsche are now clothing brands. Mitsubishi also makes VCR's (ok, so they're kind of like Samsung and just do everything).

Point is, BMW or any car company is still a company and it's out to make money.

In all truthfulness, I'd buy an M3 too if it came with an AWD option. I went with the 335 xdrive too because of the availability of the AWD too.
BIngo!

Some of us need AWD

Last time I checked, the Porsche Carrera comes in the 4S all wheel drive format.

For a daily driver in the north, I'd buy an all wheel drive M3. In warmer locales, I would go rear wheel drive.

Why not have the option? Like people who prefer the engine in the back, with its unfavourable weight distribution, why not give the option of four wheel drive? From a performance standpoint, some people like that.

He meant the Turbo. Whatever, point stands...why not offer the choice?

I have no objection to Dual-clutch transmission or even an automatic...so long as they offer 6MT

How can you call yourselves American be against have options/freedom to spec your machines the way you want them.

Its an election year.

You can never say never... we live in evolving times.

Enjoy what you have now, when tomorrow comes with a 471hp 6-turbo with all wheel drive, enjoy that too.

Thank god. AWD is always a compromise as far as performance is concerned.

I really hope this is true. The xDrive option first became a viable option when the X5 paid for its development. It has come a long way since then but there is no denying its SUV origins. Now that we have the M versions of the X5 and X6 we can probably thank the SUV once again. The M3 is a flagship for the BMW brand so if they stick an AWD in it, it won't be a convenience option, it will add to performance.

Turbo plus AWD in an M3? This is my dream car.

To all you AWD haters, what possibly could be the harm with having it as an option? Just don't check off the xDrive box when configuring it and you can go on with your pursuit of the RWD ideal.

Well looks like the M3 is making the complete transition into a mass consumer product instead of an enthusiast product.

As long as they kept the weight down, I think awd would be great.

As I live in a very snowy area and cant drive my AMG throughout the year, I would absolutely love an AWD M. The M's and AMG's need some AWD options.

Well we all know what happens with what the ///M Gmbh said. Let's face it. They've sold out. If they'll put an automatic, turbocharged V-8 in an X5 and X6 and slap ///M badges on it, what makes you or ANYONE think that any of the things that's not suppose to happen to the M3, won't happen?

Don't be surprised if there's a front wheel driven, automatic turbocharged V-6 ///M in the near future. With run-flats.
Yeah, and I wonder what they said about having an //M SUV?? Yeah, I doubt many could even conceive such an idea. Also, AMG is even thinging about diesel and hybrids. . so the sky is the limit here.

Point is I don't really care if the next M3 is AWD or RWD (As long as it's not FWD), the important thing is that it's the quickest, best handling and best performing car in its class. And I hope it comes in an e91.

I have never heard this?! I ve been to the 1/4 mile track a couple times, and the xi's were consistently running upper 13's with tunes.

I have driven the New S4 a couple times... I will admit the launch and second gear pull harder than my car. (After that its a wrap for them) Also, the GT-R will snap your neck in half off the line. Saying this, it is possible to gain a tremendous 60' advantage w/an AWD system. As far as getting the same satisfaction when turning traction off... I doubt it. BMW is all about feel on the track, who remebers when it was M3 vs. RS4 in american lemans (i think), and the Audi would ALWAYS swing wide and go off track.. blame it on AWD. Picture the Rahal/letterman GT2 M3 with AWD.. cause it would translate in to race cars. AWD.. NAHHH dont think so.

I took the liberty to move this thread to m3post.

On the subject, I haven't found anybody being able to confirm this. So, it's either 'top secret' or not going to happen.

What I've learned though is that BMW M has tested an AWD system some years ago. The idea was to have an AWD with the ability of a 100% rear bias, coupled with an 'OFF switch'. That way, owners would have the best of both worlds, the added traction of AWD when needed and the trademark RWD behaviour and excitement, all by the touch of a button (e.g. for track days). As every AWD system, it would have added weight.

Anyway, this M AWD never was green-lighted, or so I was told. Also, the possible introduction of the X3 M speaks against an AWD M3.

Personally, if anything, I'd expect some form of KERS with the I6 engine being routed to the rear in a traditional way and the e-motors powering the front wheels. But, that's VED technology and probably too costly for the M3.

Best regards,
south

Me too I heard that too! I heard it would come with 3 twin-scroll turbos, FWD only, and it comes in a 3-door model. The automatic gearbox is a 4-speed unit.

I also heard that theyre doing a limited edition frozen tree-huggers edition (green) for the diehard environmentalist within you, and that special edition comes with a hybrid motor. The button that originally turns the engine start/stop function on/off at red lights turns into an RPM limiter, since no one in their right mind would go past 65 and over 3k RPM in their quest to save the environment, and would never turn such a function off!

BMW expects the limited edition 10,000 car run to sell out within the first year.

lol I Be JK-ing.

Due to the concern AWD adds weight which is why the X series M models exist. If you want AWD then it will have to be either X5M or X6M , but there will be a X3M and a X4M in the not-so-distant future.
Must be the ///M X3 protocamo that I chased through the mountains with my E39 M5 and could not catch it.

Methinks that someone is planting information - either to attempt to throw off the competition or to try to find out who is leaking future model info.
