Hey guys is the removal of the filter emissions related only, or is there a difference in sound and/or performance?
Thanks |

The Hydrocarbon Filter is a part of the airbox. It doesn't exist in ETK by itself. As has been stated, they're for catching blow-by from the CCV and additionally for filtering the Fuel Tank EVAP Ventilation System.

@lemetier , please read the thread, we just went through this ... my Canadian M4 has parts 268/269 and has the charcoal liner, well using my VIN al least yields that. Post #29.

Based off replacement from 04/2017 ETK return. Your government Ratified and Signed CETA in Feb permitting the less expensive ECE replacement assembly. It was assembled new at the factory with 491/2 which include the Hydrocarbon Filters per NA Spec. The US is now the sole oddball out now.

I'm considering removing the charcoal filters on my 2017 F80 and searching for more information regarding results. I found an interesting youtube post from engineering explained comparing before and after results of charcoal filter removal on a subaru crosstrek. Obviously this is a very different engine/car, but to extrapolate, it sounds like mild HP and TQ gaines might be expected. That being said, any "butt dyno" perceived gains are likely to be negligible.
Last post on this thread was some time ago and I'm wondering if anyone has had any emissions/warranty issues following removal of these filters. I'm guessing this might be an issue in some states more than other (i.e. California, a state from which I am a resident emeritus ). |

They are there to absorb crankcase gasses that vent after you turn the car off. They do nothing when the car is running and removing them has no gains other than turbo/intake sound. I took them out when I upgraded to BMC panel filter.

Dyno tests have confirmed that just removing the charcoal filters with the stock air filters provides practcally the same power gains as aftermarket air filter.

Bumping this old thread and quoting these two posts to ask for additional confirmation and/or anecdotal input from others: If I remove the charcoal filters and leave the stock air filters in place, will I hear additional turbo noise? Last edited by SteveYem; 05-08-2024 at 11:51 AM.. |
