I swear I saw that and found it interesting as if there is a preset number of times it can be used. The car in question didn't perform so well either, not sure if it was due to it just being abused or what, but it was handily beaten and didn't put up the 'published' numbers.

Edit think this is the video:

13.0 in the 1/4 and 0-60 in a shade under 5 seconds isn't exactly screaming, that's like PPK 335 numbers.
I never heard of a "preset limit" for quantity of launches. However, there are DCT temperature boundaries for using launch control. The owner's manual mentions that the DCT has to be sufficiently warmed up to be able to use Launch Control. The transmission also needs to be cooled down after using launch control before it can be used again. The owner's manual mentions that the car need to be driven for a few miles before attempting to use launch control again. The latter might be the limit encountered in the video...

Not quite. The engine revs to a preset rpm and holds that rpm with WOT. That allows full boost to build and when you launch there is no lag from the turbos.

Did you know that thermonuclear war was narrowly averted at noon one day after a Russian missile technician asked his comrade "we do launch now?"

Anyway I hope the procedure isn't as complicated as it apparently is in the current M5 as I don't thing I have the stomach to be revving my 425 hp + car with the foot off the brake and all that is separating me from all hell breaking loose is releasing my grip slightly on a gear selector momentarily being pushed forward.

Launch Control from the Owner's Manual

Found the launch control information from the Owner's Manual:

Launch Control
The concept
Launch Control enables optimum acceleration on surfaces with good traction.

Component wear
Do not use Launch Control too often; otherwise, this may result in premature wear of components due to the high stress placed on the vehicle.

Activate Launch Control
Launch Control is available when the engine is warmed up, that is, after uninterrupted driving of at least 6 miles/10 km.

1. Deactivate Dynamic Stability Control.
2. Select Sequential mode with driving program 3.
3. With the engine running, apply the brake with the left foot.
4. Fully depress the accelerator pedal.
The starting engine speed adjusts.
A flag symbol appears in the instrument cluster.
5. If necessary, change the starting engine speed by 500 rpm via cruise control.
6. Release the brake, the vehicle accelerates. Continue to depress the accelerator pedal.
Upshifting occurs automatically as long as the accelerator pedal is fully depressed.

Hints
Launch Control is available only after a certain distance has been driven.
Did not use Launch Control during the break-in period.
To maintain driving stability, always activate DSC if possible.

Do you think I'll get good at it eventually if I practice using it in my garage?

If you fuck it up, can we please have pictures?

I'll even trade for that one! I'll give you a picture of the last time tried to be nice (car related matter) and how it all ended.

Maybe offtopic, but I was watching a professional review recently (can't remember which one) and the driver said he tested both LC and without LC and acceleration is actually harder/faster without it. Just do a full kickdown.

LC on this car is maybe more for effect (smoke, traction, engine starting at high rpm) than best acceleration?

seems like LC is same as the DCT in the 335is. Only difference is that its adjustable
