Still speculations ... the car was still pushing guessing 190mph... so we do not know. 174 mph = 280 km/h Besides 280km/h is the indicated top speed for cars with the Driver´s Package.

I don't believe so. IMO, 280km/h would be the ACTUAL top speed with the driver's package, not INDICATED. Indicated meaning what shows on the car's speedo. Further, Driver's package is not available in North America, so it is quite surprising that he was able to reach that speed.

Top speed can be looked at from many points of view. Here are a few I've noticed.

Average Joe: fast enough
Average track guy: plenty of power
Guy who admires: freaking thing is fast
Hater: I can get a hell cat to blow the doors of your M4
Tech guy: 155mph
Tuner: 200 mph
Dealer: fast as your wallet will let you go
Wife: 55 mph
Kids: Go faster daddy
On lookers: slow down you stupid ass
BMW forums: have no idea

I had mine up to 267 km/h on a wide-open stretch of the german Autobahn.

I have analyzed that drive in my M Laptimer.
- 98% Throttle
- 6123 rpm
- 267 km/h
- 41l/100km Fuel

Guess one could come up with a theoretical top speed?

So post the numbers please!

By the way I was told from Germany today that there is a delay with the NEW App software fore the new M Performance stuff that connects with OBDII it will come in April.....
Somewhere BMW posted the unrestricted top speed. I believe it was 183 or 186 mph. Can't remember which.

Top speed limiter

Does anyone know if the top speed limiter is active on US cars?

I am thinking of entering a speed run and would like to know before I show up and find software to be the limiting factor. It's a one mile course. I am reading people do 140s in a 1/2 mile with a mild tune f8x. If that's true I would assume in a mile it would hit the limiter if active.

Yes, it's present on US cars. F80's electronically governed top speed is 155 MPH/250 KPH. I think it can be removed with a tune, though.

Looks like you're right. I only knew what I'd read online, can't say I'll test out that speed myself.

I would think 167 is enough for a mile run with a piggy.

Would your international test confirm this? Bahn360Photo Unixed

Another thing to keep in mind is that the relationship between velocity and required power is cubic:

Power = Fd*v = 0.5*Rho*v^3*A*Cd

Rho = air density
v = velocity
A = frontal area
Cd = drag coefficient

This means that the power required to maintain 200mph is roughly twice the power required for 160mph.

Low 180s mph seems more realistic.

you are talking about potential. i read somewhere that M without limiter car reach 187 mph. so your calculations are pretty spot on.

we are talking about electronic limiter.

I took my M4 out this week on the A7 Autobahn and had it up to 168mph which was pretty awesome, the 435i I traded in would only do 155mph. From talking to different BMW owners there are individual variances on the cars, one of my friends 335i does 161mph.

Yes, my 435i was 155mph and my M4 is 168mph. Both American spec cars, living in Germany for a couple of years.

It depends on what type of tires that came on your car when it was delivered from the factory, if you got all season tires on a 335 or 435, the limiter is set to 130, if you got summer performance tires the limiter is set to 155.

There are individual variances though, the M4 is suppossed to be 156mph and I had it at 168mph.

I managed 172mph im my stock M4 (as per the HUD) @5500rpm. it slipped past 155mph with ease and it didn't hit a limiter and she still had more to give - I just freaked out early...

Cool MSA of Speed

Looking through all the posts it would be interesting to perform a Measurement System Analysis of the F80 speedometer and the driver reading it. With Nick Murray's observation with 8mph of variance between his speedo and GPS, and everyone's suggested top speed, it certainly begs to be done

According to my speed in the heads-up, (which I think I read properly) the fastest I have been is at NCCAR at 142mph. According to the Blackvue GPS it was more like 138mph.

Part of the MSA measures the folks reading the gauge too, to confirm if they come up with the same result each time. Speaking of which, I want to know how one goes about reading 167 MPH on an odometer.

All variance in gauges is evil and evidence of it in the gauge or in the individuals reading the gauge discredits how fast we think our car can go. But does it really matter? We all like to go fast and probably seldom adhere to the posted limits.

4mph seems about right in terms of error. I remember different tests showing an indicated 167mph top speed for a 163mph GPS measured one.
