Bad lifter.... Prob driven hard before warm up before you bought it or BMW remotely initiated lifter tick so the service department can repair and get paid

10W-60 time

I'd be so pissed off

My F80 has also done this several times. First time was about 4 days after Euro Delivery while in Italy and several times when it got to the states. I thought it was peculiar and figured it was something priming since it has only happened when the car is unlocked and before engine start and only after the car has sat overnight.

My wife joked it's a bomb she placed when she's pissed at me so I need to mind my P's and Q's.

Now I'm curious as to what it is as up to now I figured it was normal.

UPDATE:

Hello everyone! It's been a little while but I had to come back and give you all an update.

Well after sitting for about a week at my local dealer, she unfortunately didn't tick while in the dealer care. So alas, nothing was done in relation to that particular issue. I took her and my video to a local Indie shop, not really hoping for an answer since almost all of these cars are still under Warranty and Maint by BMW, and asked if they had heard of such a thing. They of course said no. Alas the journey continues as to just what in the world my car is doing. She is going to another dealer for another set of eyes and maybe she'll do it there, who knows. But I'll keep everyone in the loop.

Still no verdict from BMW. There are a couple of theories that are now floating around my head as I heard a super similar noise but it wasn't repeating, IE no tick.

Any performance issues?

If none, Then don't worry about ticking issues! Does your wife love you, if not worry about a IED?

Yeah no idea man. Mine is locked up every night without fail. I don't think I had my FOB with me when mine started ticking.

My M3 has just done this noise as well, car was unlocked in the garage as i was in there cleaning it.

Opened the drivers door to get key out of the footwell and lock the car, and this ticking noise started, lasted for about a minute and I got it on video.

I've had 2 M3's since June 2015 now and I've never had this before.

My 2016 M3 zcp has been making this noise since I took delivery of her last year. It happens randomly. OP did the service tech ever duplicate the issue?

My F80 does it, but only for 1-2 minutes after start up (hot and cold) and I can literally hear it go away, then the motor sounds very smooth. Im not worried about it.

To all those that are wondering after 3 trips to the dealer Techs were still unable to reproduce the issue. But To be honest, it still does it to this day, but I'm no longer worried about it as it does not change the performance of the vehicle in any way.

My June 2017 M4 Comp does this randomly. It also sometimes makes a clicking noise just as soon as the door is opened, before I have even started it from a cold start.

I still don't think this is 'normal'. Sounds like the common theory is the valve lifters, but that ticking is really fast, so I'm not so sure of that either. Going to do some research for my own curiosity.

How can it be valve lifters when the engine is off as per the above video?

Must be electric valves in the electric motor of the all electric version of the M3.

It's your valvetronic motor. I resolved this a few months back and posted it in this thread:http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1389358 I was the 2nd in nation to identify the issue and get it fixed.

mdefalco25 Is your car tuned by chance? I have a strict order to never plug my car into ISTA for any reason, since my vehicle is tuned and the last thing I need to do is flag myself for something that doesn't really affect the car. Either that or perhaps Charlie@McKennaBMWService can you help me out
