4500 miles on my 2016, haven't had this issue once. And in my area of the east bay they haven't repaved the roads in 20 years, so I kick up gravel every day when I leave my house. They must have changed the heat shield design slightly.

I'm becoming way too attached to this car. After 4500 miles it's already twice as reliable as my 135i was

That looks like fun.

I had the same issue, but brought it in to the dealership for the service bulletin. I haven't heard it since

Great video Powaup! Haven't had the heat shield issue in my '16 yet but am waiting patiently lol. However I'm a proud member of the CCB wheel gouge club which makes up for missing out on all the fun you heat shield guys are having.

For those of you who have this issue, do you have spacers installed or stock?

Thankfully I haven't had this happen, but I've had spacers on for almost all of the 15k miles of ownership. Could there be a correlation or is it just dumb luck?

Spacers don't matter. The rocks get stuck where the dust shield is.

The CCB issue is worse w the rocks getting stuck between the rotor and wheel and cutting grooves into the inner barrels of the rim. Bad designs all together
Yea pushing the heat shield back sometimes works, however it didn't this time

Just encountered this problem for the first time on my way home. I have a 16 m4 with CCB's. Sounded like my wheels fell off the car. Isolated the noise to the passenger rear wheel. I shook the dust shield and out fell the smallest pebble I have ever seen. Couldnt believe all the chaos it can cause!! Good thing it was a 2 second fix....

I have a 2015 M3 and I experienced this issue the 3rd day I owned the car. It was coming from the rear passenger side wheel. It sounded like metal on metal and the severity of the noise would vary greatly based on suspension load and speed.

I called the dealer and they had the car for 3 days trying to figure it out. They said they found a rock lodged between the dust shield and brake rotor. They also said BMW is aware of the issue and they send them pictures and documentation of the problem. They ended up replaced both rear brake rotor dust shields. My car was fine for the next month...until two days ago. The sound is back...argh!

I have not contacted the dealer yet. I'm going to take the wheels off and look at it myself. I want to see if I can locate the rock/debris and get a better understanding of what is actually causing the problem. This is a very frustrating design flaw.

Same issue here! This has happened to me so often that I am seriously thinking of selling the car. I pulled over yesterday because the noise was insane...I pushed on the brake shield and a ridiculously small stone fell out. I wouldn't be so pissed if I didn't already have the latest fix from BMW already installed. I mean it's soooooo F-ing loud!!

Thank you Bimmerpost! I had this issue today at 1600 miles. FYI, 4/2016 production. I was able to get rid of it by pushing on the heat shield, although I didn't see a pebble fall out. What a horrible sound. Interesting that I have never had this issue on my my M5 or Z4M coupe. This weekend I will check, but I'm not even sure they have heat shields.

I just stared having the noise and knew right away what it was and unlucky for me my driveway is stone. I tried in vein to push/pull the heat shield to no avail, had the damn drivers rear wheel off 3 times trying to find the little fucker. I finally fave up and I made an appointment at the dealer tomorrow morning.

Has anyone removed or trimmed the heat shield?

So there is a fix for this? it's happened to me 3-4 times but just ignored it and went away eventually. it was really annoying but didn't think it was a big enough deal to take it into he dealership. My local dealership never has rental cars available which is very discouraging to bring anything in.

ever since i first took delivery of my M4 a couple thousand miles ago, i've heard random, loud, nasty, tinny clunks at the back wheels. my wife (likely trying to appease me) answers, "no, i don't think so" every time i yell, "was that my fucking car???"

well today, i had that nasty scraping sound everyone's been describing... it almost sounded like a muffler or heat shield was dragging on the ground or something. i pulled over and nothing was dragging. so, i wiggled the rotor heat shield of the wheel nearest the sound and started driving again - no more scraping. after doing that, i assumed that the random clunks i'd been hearing were rocks or something just getting kicked up against my heat shields or something.

is this common? if so, do y'all just deal with it or is there a dealer recommended fix?

It happened to me twice in the tear Rt side only after I got my 285 RE71s. Could be a coincidence but I thought the sticky tires pick up and fling more stones. Each time it happened, I backed up my car a few feet and the stone fell out. I Didn't even have to step out of the car to fix it. Now I'm sure a big enough stone may require some physical manipulation to remove.

Loud metal-on-metal sound from R rear wheel

So I got out of my workplace parking lot last evening and after a short while noted a noise from the rear. I lowered the windows and heard a pretty loud metal on metal scraping sounds from the R rear wheel. Pulled over and having read about the rocks and the rotor shield thing, pressed on all the rotors and in spite of that the noise persisted. It is loudest at slow speeds. So I called my CA and he immediately asked me to get it towed. Don't know if it is as simple as a small rock that was not ready to just fall out. Will update my post as I get more info.

I have had this and it was just a rock chip. It does make a horrible and scary noise. Hope that's all you have.
