These are supposedly redesigned to shed rocks/pebbles easier. I dunno. Not really in love with the idea of disassembling the brake system to do the upgrade, but don't want that horrid noise while driving around town (it actually gave me nightmares, lol). They'll be here mid-week...hoping for the best.
I dont want to beat a dead horse...but skip the upgraded ones and just push the shields back with your hand.

I actually passed on the install when they confirmed it was the same part as the revised version. However, the SA did say it was 'Index 03', which leads me to believe the third version of the plate may be now available. Luckily, I haven't gotten one since, but I'm prepared to push the shields back to remedy. As for the new shields, I'll discuss it with them when I go in for my 1200 mile break-in service.

intermittent car noise

I have had my F80 for about 9 mo now and enjoying quite alot. Periodically, however, during random driving times (straight, turning, etc) I hear a noise that can only be described as metal scraping like what happens when you go over a speed bump on a lowered car. It doesnt happen all the time and I am not sure if it happens only in sport/sport plus. Doesn't seem to affect performance and only lasts a few seconds?

Any ideas?

Maybe a pebble/stone caught between the brake dust shield. It's a very common issue with the F8x's.

Do a search in the future, you'll find tons on the topic.

As posted above, its probably a rock stuck between the brake dust shield. It happens on my 2017 periodically and like you it only last a second or two before going away.

Just a small something I found....if you up under there with the wheels off and you lean on or bump one..... it can be slightly distorted just enough to scrape. I found that out when I installed my coil overs

Recurring 'stone-and-the-rotor-shield' problem

I seem to find that any time i drive over a road with any amount of small pebbles/stones on it, I invariably hear the dreaded grinding from the stone getting between the rotor and the shield. It lasts for only a couple of secs but it does get on my nerves. Anyone else having the same issue?

Another problem that I have found is a creaking sound that comes from the passenger side front end and this is only when the steering is turned right close to lock. What could this be?

Same issue here, on multiple F8x too...super lame but seems to be the 'norm'.

Probably my biggest complaint about the car.

During an M6 track event i attended over the summer, the cars there also suffered from these rotor rocks... so much that the instructor had the tell people to ignore the rock sounds. Also I remember people having problems with this in M3post, complaining about cowbell noises.

Is this a problem with BMW or all cars in general? I've never had this problem before.
I've been to the dealership twice on this issue. They finally decided to order the updated heat shield. Just yesterday I got my car back and its doing it again!

I have been told just pull back the heat shield in order to release the rocks.

Garage List
Rear rotor shield update

I had updated shields installed on my '15 (7/14 delivery) in August '15. This much improved the symptoms, but did not completely eliminate them, especially lately when they put down gravel on the roads for snow events. Had some rocks removed when my car was in yesterday for alignment and they ordered the second generation replacement shields for me - should be in next week.

Know this is old & the f80 forum but anyone have the same issue regarding a grinding noise from the d/s rear? I’m taking it into the dealer tomorrow so they can take a look to see what it is! Here’s a link to a video I found where it sounds like it has the same exact problem but I’m not sure what it could be!?

I have a 2016 ZCP M3 with Carbon Ceramic Brakes. I have had this issue happen 2 times, rock gets stuck and makes a awful sound. Pushing the heat shield back and it fixes it. I take my car to the BMW dealership and had them look at it. They said there is a TSB for the rear dust shield but it does not apply to CCB cars. I tried calling BMW NA and they don't have anything regarding this issue. I am not sure what to do at this point.

I removed mine last week, those are the new ones covered under the TSB, the right one right would grind on hard left turns.

Finaly had time to pick up my car at the service center.
Both shields upgraded to latest version and a bunch of little bits and odds also replaced with it.

Hey guys,

I have had a persistent (and very annoying) squeak like noise coming from my front CCB brakes. I just removed the wheels and tried to find jammed rocks/pebbles, but could not find anything.

The noise can be heard with the windows up while cruising at low speeds. I originally thought it was the suspension, but the sound is clearly tied to the rotation of the wheels and you can hear it spin up as you increase speed. As soon as you press the brakes, the noise instantly goes away. It's a 2018 M3 with 6K miles. :

Has anyone experienced this or have any potential tips?

I'm having my car go in for service next week and one of the issues I am having is the issue discussed here. My warranty ends end of October so I'm trying to get anything addressed while I have coverage. I see lots of people mentioning a technical bulletin. Does anyone have details on the buletin or actual doc?

Same part number? Can anyone share the Bulletin? Have a friend with this issue and I'm coming up short on finding this "updates" heat shield part.
