DCT switches from D to N by itself?

Today as I was getting the car in the garage the DCT kept shifting to N by itself. At the beginning I thought I touched the shift knob by mistake but the car kept switching to N on its own. It must have done it at least 5 times in just few yards. I turned the car off and on and the issue continued to happen. Did anyone hear about this issue? I will call the dealer tomorrow and get the car towed.
The car is 2018 ZCP with about 8000 miles and was problem free until today.

mine's never done that nor do I recall anyone describing that so I can't even speculate. but I'm definitely subscribed to see how this turns out. maybe another member knows about this. anyway, I think I see a trip to the dealer in your near future. good luck, and keep us posted.

I will post the outcome once I manage to get the dealer to tow it. I think the dealer is going to say "DCT software issue". BTW the car is stock.

I think it was closed but I'm not sure if it was closed completely. I don't recall hearing any door alarm though. I will try to drive the car around the house in the morning and see what happens.

I noticed mine did that when I had my door cracked while trying to pull into a narrow driveway.

The constant switching to N with the door open is one of the most annoying "features" on the car. Frequently crack my door when parking to get the car lined up.
I figured it out though - when the door is open, as long as you don't take your foot off the brake, it won't switch to neutral (if you jump between brake and gas without having your foot off both pedals for more than a second, it won't switch to neutral). It's only when neither pedal is pressed that it goes into N.

Guilty as charged. The only way the DCT shifts back to neutral, on its own, is when the car knows you are going to hurt yourself or worse yet, the car. No Keke Challenge for you!!!!!!!!!!! NEXT!

I think this was the case since there was no codes stored. The dealer wants to take the car and reprogram DCT when I take it next week for oil change. The car drove fine yesterday.

DCT D to N

I had this happen with my e90 M3. Went into nuetral at highway speeds on two occasions and I can assure you the door was not open. Dealer kept my car for 7 months trying to figure it out...yes 7 months! They were able to replicate the issue on at least one occasion but never found the root cause. Supposedly flew in a BMW specialist that couldn’t figure it out either. Figured they would just replace the tranny and move on but that was never presented as an option. I ended up trading for a ‘17 M3 comp package...that DCT imploded in about a year and a half while I was casually driving. Also caused the carbon fiber drive shaft to fail. Surprisingly BMW immediately replaced my tranny and drive shaft on the new car. No issues since.

I didn't lower my guard yet I'm still very cautious. I drove the car today to run some errands and the car was fine. I hope it was the door like most assumptions.

That’s likely the issue but wanted to share my experience just in case it’s not. Keep us posted.

So were you ever compensated for the seven months loss of use? Was there loss of value when you traded to the F80? Sorry to hear you had such a hard time with the E90.

You had the door not completely closed. You don't necessarily get a warning alarm either if it is almost closed.

I would not let them update the DCT software, you are asking to possibly introduce an issue. There is nothing wrong with your car. Software just does not go bad. This is not like your PC where it constantly gets software updates that can cause issues. It never changes until BMW dealer updates it, so it cannot change from day 1. It was doing what it was programmed to do.
