I thought the E46 M3 CSL was the last pure M3.

I got no problem with a V6.

BMW has shown over and over that they are capable of bringing unique and interesting innovations to the engine development arena with the N54, S63B44Tü etc.

I will mourn the passing of the iconic straight six.

Unhappy

so... this is a V6? a V6 BMW?? A Bavarian V6??
BMW just killed the NA I6 and they are also going to kill turbo I6?
Seriously?? What happens to Bavarian now? Even this car is fun to drive, I won't call it a BMW. You guys dropped the V8, fine. The almost flawless I6? wow...

Anyway, I hope the real production car is not a V6. How do you guys know that it is a V6 btw? Just curious.

Nice to see a V6. BMW said "no dogmas", so after M automatic gearbox, M suv and M turbo I see no problem in M V6 eventhough I would like M to stay faithfull. GT-R went from I6 to V6 and Supra will go from I6 to V6 (some rumor says H6 that would then be an upgrade).

Funny all this V6 and turbo sound complaints. If someone wants sound then get the 458 Italia or LF-A. But as for all the rest expect the end of all NA engines. Alot of Audi fans complain the RS4 Avant is getting the RS5's NA V8 instead of the TT V6. The next C AMG is still to very likely to get a FI V6, so as the next RS4/RS5. The Porsche are going to ditch their NA Flat6 for FI Flat4, 911 Turbo will continue having a FI Flat6.
I cannot understand why so many want the N54/N55 in the next M3. It will just look like a 335i with M badges. At least so, the M3 will have exclusive chassis, body, powertrain and drivetrain, of course unfortunately also price.

Also, who says the new 3 Series is larger? Yes it has longer wheelbase, is a few milimeters larger but weighs about 30 kg les than the E90. The F80 will be even lighter than F30. Expect it to weigh 50-100 kg less than M3 E9X. Now if you take all the options, which like head-up display IMO are pointless, of course this will add weight.

Engines that exhaust through turbochargers are never going to sound the same as a non forced induction engine. This is because the engine exhaust pulses are directed into a chamber to turn the turbo.

Having said that, never give up on BMW or the aftermarket.
No. My I-6 engine has a turbocharger on it and sounds fantastic. This engine, regardless of forced induction, sounds like a '90s GM V-6, which is maybe the second least desirable engine note next to a Honda 4-banger. I'm sure the new M3 will be a stunner, but BMW will have their work cut out for them in the exhaust note category.

My E90 sounds ten times better than that. The new M3 sounds like a Ricer Turbo Civic.

You can be absolutely, undeniably sure that this car will weigh more than the current M3.

Every time a new car is being developed I hear bullsh1t about how much lighter it will be than the previous car, and every single time it weighs more.

The F10M, despite rumors that some weak-minded individuals may have believed, weighs 200 freakin pounds more than the previous version.

Same story with the E9XM vs the E46M.

People who talk about lighter cars ignore that adding size and equipment does not get offset by adding stupid CF mirrors or a CF roof. It just does not happen.

It will be heavier and that's all there is to it. Ideas of stronger steel, aluminum and CF are pretty but expensive and will not even offset the increase in weight due to equipment/safety/size.

Your car sounds better than any other M car that will be produced, ever.

It's pretty simple: NA sounds way, way, way better than any turbo cars. At most turbo cars get a farty, loud exhaust, but it can't be compared to a NA, highly tuned engine.

A Porsche Turbo S is very very fast, but it sounds like a freakin vacuum cleaner. Zero engine sound coupled with a loud, farty exhaust that is totally uninspiring.

Last time I checked there's still a Turbo I6 in the 335

I'm just curious because thats the only version to have a V8, yet people talk about it like the M3 has only ever been one. Do you forget that the E36 and 46 were both I6s?

Not to mention that the E30 was a 4 banger. And that's the original and true "real" M3

No concerns here. I'm sure BMW/M will put out a great car. It already looks pretty good and sounds mean (though I wish they would rev it a bit in the video) I haven't even gotten my E92 back yet from ED and here they are testing the replacement!! Oh well, I have no regrets, I will LOVE my car for sure.

I love how the comments look and sound the same whenever we see a new mule on any BMW car. There are people that say "Wow--this is gonna be awesome" and people who say "This looks and sounds like shit!"

It always makes me laugh because you are talking about a product that is on step 5 of a timeline that has 1695832 total steps. We really have no idea at this point, especially based on the video that was attached.

A few things that I would bet on for the next generation M3--it will have more power, it will get better gas mileage, and it will be FI. And, it will be a great car to drive. Like previous M3s, differences be damned. The details, however, will be sorted out over the next 2 years.

I read these threads for the entertainment, nothing more.

I was really hoping for a V8... I was stuck between this and a GTR for my next car...

A few things that are likely certain on the next m3:
It will be FI.
It will have a faster 0-60 and 1/4 mile time than the e9x.
It will have more HP and torque.
It will have a faster ring time by probably 10 sec or so.
It will "feel" much faster than the e9x around town.
It will likely weigh the same or slightly more.
It will, with time as the e9x becomes more dated, look better.
It will have better mpg than e9x.
It will cost more.
It will not be faster than or as fast as a GTR.
It will not sound as good as a e9x

What we don't know:
Which engine layout.
If it will be as reliable as a e9x.
If the leather will hold up better.
If it will be as fun to drive, though I would guess yes.

I think that about sums it up.
