M4 Rides at NJMP-Thunderbolt. Awesome!

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Matt Russell of BMW NA brought an AY M4 w/ DCT to Thunderbolt at New Jersey Motorsports Park on Monday, June 2 where NJ BMWCCA was having a HPDE and Club Race. Matt was gracious enough to give track rides to anyone who asked!

Wow. He went out in the advanced and instructor groups all day and basically schooled us all (an amazing car with a great driver will do that). Got a chance to ride with him for a half dozen laps and was blown away. The car is soooo stable, largely due, according to Matt, the changes to the rear half of the car and the lower center of gravity, which he noted don't get nearly enough attention. The DCT allowed Matt to be very aggressive with his shifting, with what seemed like more up/down shifts than one would do with a 6MT.

The motor is everything you would expect and then some. Honestly, I don't even recall what it sounded like (I know that question is coming...), because all the excitement was in front of us on the track. There seemed to be so much power on tap, whenever he wanted it. And, remember, this was running with a group that included a lot of dedicated track cars.

Left me more excited than ever for my order (almost tempted me to switch to DCT, but it almost seemed too effortless). Can't wait for week 26 to get here!

I was able to ride along for a full session on Monday afternoon.

I love my E90, but now I really want one of these! The power band is fantastic and the launch out of corners was particularly impressive. I'm coming around to turbo torque!

I was concerned about the sound of the engine. Not anymore. It sounded fantastic flying down the front straight, and the interior sound was fine, too - even with a helmet on.

Following it on track, it looks really low and wide. It looks like its built for speed.

Finally, the most impressive thing was the carbon ceramic brakes. I didn't think I needed to shell out the money for this option. I've changed my mind. Talk about throwing out an anchor, holy cow do these things work! Lap after lap, they never changed their stopping power.

From the passenger seat, this M3 seems like a significant improvement from the E9x cars. I can't wait to drive one myself!

If you intend to track your car often 4+ times a year then this option is absolutely a mandatory expense and one of the best performance upgrades one can have in a track car. If this is you then go for it! However For the rest of us like me it is a waste of money better spent elsewhere.

I'm trying to justify the CCB's. I will not track it 4+ times/year, but the more I learned about the CCB, the more I realize not only how good they are, but how much bang/buck you get. Still, it's the most expensive option available, by a lot. And I agree it's not worth it, and much better spent elsewhere.

OP, nice to hear your thoughts on the car, and the ride. Despite some of the mediocre, luke-warm, qualified, "but" reviews, I'm pretty sure I'll like the car a lot. If I was given a ride by someone who was awesome, I can't imagine not being impressed with the car, and what the driver can do with it.

All that, and then you can take the spouse and kids for a night around town in a very refined car. What's not to like??

That's me! I agree that I'd spend the money elsewhere if I didn't go to the track. You don't see the repeated calls for full braking from high speeds on the street, ever. On the track, you need brakes all the time right now, and this is where the optional brakes really shine.

The fanboys are out

I don't what your guys are smoking...But don't tell me a stock M4 with street tires wasn't getting passed when the driver pushed the car probably 9/10's.....in the advanced group....if so that is one pussy filled session..with no p cars...

Right, would help if we had lap times. I'm sure he was passing the slower guys but held his own with the faster ones as in not getting passed.

What is a fast lap for cars, let's say stock with slicks?

I run 1:35-1:37 with a bike.

From my experience even the competition in advanced groups (NASA,BMW Club DE, P-Club DE, etc.) varies greatly, and i've seen where seniority trumps over faster lap times in lower groups. I took part of an event at Hallett with a stock E46 M3 and initially was intimated by the Viper ACRs being loaded off the trailers as well as GTRs, 600hp mustangs, and the like, needless to say, most became a nuisance later in the day. At Gateway I brought a stock E92 M3 and was faster than 90% of the advanced cars. I say this not to boast my driving ability (trust me there's much better out there), but rather to point out that high potential vehicles and seniority in certain clubs/organizations make up the majority of the advanced groups. Granted, the senior drivers in the slower cars are much more comfortable and able to deal with lax passing rules, but I'm an advocate for groups being set by lap times/pace.

Now that i'm off my soapbox, it's definitely plausible a stock M4 doesn't get passed in the advanced groups

On another note, despite some people not thinking it's possible, I definitely warped the E92 M3 rotors (stock pads) at that event (Hardest braking is about 140-90 in the first corner, think it was a total of 4 20 mins sessions.) I hope the non-CC brakes in the F8X are better. The reduced weight should of course also help with that.

Couple of things...

First, it's a fanboy site, what do you expect?

Second, I'm not comparing it to GT3s, GT-Rs, and exotics.

I will say it's more of an improvement on track vs. the E9x than I imagined. Time will tell, but I think you're going to be hard pressed to find anything at this price point with 4 real seats that's this capable out of the box on track.

By the way, he wasn't doing 9/10ths for most of the session. He was getting the most out of it. The PSS's started to get a little greasy after about 15 minutes and he backed it down. He's a very skilled driver and probably has a lot of seat time in this car by now.

That's a spot on observation of the PSS's, they are great street tires, on the track at 7/10 they'll stay constant all day, at 9/10 or faster 10-15 mins is all they'll have before they get greasy.

I'm not going to shy away from the exotics for critics, I love GT3s, but i am willing to bet an average driver in a GT3 is going to get smoked by an experienced driver in the M4. A 997.1 GT3 weighs about 3200 lbs with 415 hp, the M4 weighs a bit more but also has a bit more hp/torque. From my experience driving any rear-engine car fast is more difficult than any of the last two M3 generations at 9/10. Given both cars current prices it'd be an interesting track comparison and it'll show the M cars progress over the last decade. Now, steering feel, driving reward, sound, etc. is a whole other discussion and I'd be very surprised if the new M3/M4 tops the GT3 in any of those categories. The M3/4 response to that is comfort, luxury, economy, and backseats. A tradeoff, but performance should be close.
