I got a new bell helmet last week at VIR. I didn't realize it was polarized. Lid up, I Had my polarized prescription glasses on, so barely could see the HUD (normal). Infotainment system (showing tire pressure) was nice and visible.

So yeah BMW totally screwed up.

So what is funny is I Started down pit lane, pulled down the visor for the first time, BAM. Counter polarization. HUD super bright like I have never seen, infotainment dark..... wasn't expecting that, but it fixed my HUD problem. 2 polarization filters!

Yeah. BMW screwed up by not orienting everything in the car the same way.
I think BMW should do a "we screwed up" recall on the HUD. What a rookie mistake for a car company.

FYI. I'll get a new non polarized faceplate for my helmet and I'm getting new non polarized prescription sunglasses.

For my Euro Delivery in May 2016 I took a really old, non-polarized pair of Serengeti Driver aviator-style sunglasses which worked great. By the time my car was redelivered, I bought a pair of non-polarized Ray-Ban New Wayfarers with Orange Flash lenses to match my car. They work great. I keep them in the car and when I'm not driving my M4 I wear one of my many pairs of Maui Jim polarized sunglasses.

Polarized Oakley Prizm Lenses and HUD

I'm posting this for anyone that might search for it in the future, as I did in the past and came up empty.

I'd been wanting to get some new sunglasses and knew that polarized lenses aren't great with the HUD. I saw Oakley has their new Prizm lenses in various functions - daily, road, golf, trail, water, etc. I wasn't sure how they would be with the HUD, but Oakley had free shipping and returns so I took a chance.

I loved the look of these with the Daily Prism lenses, but it totally washed out the HUD
http://www.oakley.com/en/product/W0OO9174PZD

I also got a pair of the glasses with the Prizm Road lenses. These didn't affect the HUD at all, but sadly, most of the Road lenses are on ugly white or red glasses. Glasses that in general aren't the classy look I was going for, but would be fine on a bike. Why they can't put their Road lenses in more normal looking glass options is beyond me unless they are truly more for things like cycling.
http://www.oakley.com/en/mens/sungla...egory/m0201001

Incidentally, I was at Sunglass Hut and asked the saleswoman about how various glasses might affect the HUD. Unfortunately the idea and concept of a HUD was completely foreign to her so she wasn't much help.

Has anyone tried any other polarized lenses that work well with the HUD?

I'm also doing a chat with a rep on the Oakley website and his response after I'd said Heads up display and in subsequent lines called it a HUD was, "Excuse me, could you tell me what HUD means?"

I then asked him the difference between their Prizm and their regular polarized lenses and he proceeded to copy and paste some info. He then told me there really isn't much of a difference. Way to sell me on your fancy tech lenses.

I have some of those now. I think they don't cut down on glare quite as well.

My Oakley Radar's G30 Iridium polarized lenses work with my HUD. Sure the brightness is reduced, but at full HUD brightness it's still plenty usable.

Those things are usually automated or farmed out to a call center type operation and they work from scripts. As to the sunglasses hut lady, I had a friend in high school who worked at one and they get zero training. He could not tell you the difference between polarized and non.

Yea, he was pretty darn useless. He probably could have told me the status of my shipping. He eventually gave me a link to Golf lenses for reasons I never did figure out.

I figured the SGH people would maybe have at least had some on the job experience where they would have learned about HUDs and the like from previous customers. I guess I was her first in that respect.

Go into the settings for the HUD and rotate it a few degrees. This should help with the polarized lenses.

Probably best to talk about LCD screens rather than HUD. They will understand better then.

I went with Persol non-polarized. No issues with HUD and plenty of eye protection even in South Florida. I also have 2 pairs of older Ray Bans, one polarized and one non-polarized. The polarized pair suck to use with HUD.

I keep non polarized sunglasses in my BMW. If you get polarized lenses, no matter the brand, you will have problems.

Polarized lens always give me issued when I drive HUD, looking at phone on the side ways, digital camera in certain angles, etc. so I gave up on them and only use non polarized.

Yes, that's what I did. I wear prescription lenses. My eye doctor told me that non-polarized lenses are very popular with pilots and people that have cars with advanced electronics (which I suppose is most new cars nowadays).

Of course, if you go skiing or fishing on a sunny day, polarized lenses can't be beat.

I dunno. I'm pretty OCD. If I tilted my HUD and it wasn't perfectly horizontal I might have to take meds.

I've since learned that the Daily Prizms are polarized while the Prizm Roads are non-polarized.

My Persol polarized glasses still allow the HUD to be usable. I do recommend rotating the HUD, and for the gentleman who made the OCD comment, think about it this way - you're aligning the HUD and the visible hood line, which is actually better

Cheers

Due to the construction's of BMW's HUD, any polarized glasses, by their nature, will wash off the display.

Interestingly enough I recently drove a Stingray with HUD and it was perfectly compatible with polarized glasses. Only the colors seemed to shift a bit. That said, the HUD looked a bit worse than what we have. The projection also seemed to be much closer than in my M4.

I guess each tech has it's pros and cons.

I also use my polarized glasses in the M4.
My solution is to up the intensity to max. Only problems that I have are in very sunny areas and there I just need to tilt my head a bit. :|
