You can always get the Giulia Quadrifoglio, it has the CF driveshaft along with tons of better stuff like more power, better sound, torque vectoring, double-wishbone front suspension, carbon fiber hood.

Cost cutting for sure...what a schiesty move. All in the name of subsidizing electrics.

In fact, that's exactly what they've done - they've added the backup camera from July 2017 (March 2017 for M4) even though the regulatory requirement does not take effect until May 2018. Furthermore, they've done it without adding a for-charge line-item (though they've adjusted pricing and packaging in other ways, no doubt finding a way to somehow pass the cost onto the customer).

You can have the drive shaft designed/built and ready to go when it is needed while still installing the CF shafts.
Sure, but until you get it in the factory and install it on production units, you have no idea if there will be unforeseen issues.

Sorry, I don't see how this isn't anything but cost cutting. It makes no logical sense.
It does to me. I am not saying there is no cost cutting anywhere in the picture here, but nothing they are doing seems outrightly contradictory to the story they have given.

And free poor reliability!

But can we not have this 27-times-before argument a 28th time here in this thread too? Please?

I didn't know that about the camera. Everything I had read here and it even came up with my CA when I was there for an oil change, was that wasn't the case and you still needed to get the executive package to get it.

I find it mysterious that the uber expensive sort of special edition CS isn't a part of this then. How would that not be held to the same regulations?

Any info on the weight between the two? Maybe with the smaller diameter it is around the same weight of the CF driveshaft. So this could all mean nothing except for a material change. I guess it wouldn't be as strong as a CF one, but strong enough I imagine.

If it is being carried out "universally" and not for the M4 CS AND GTS it is clearly cost cutting.

How does this impact replacement driveshafts?

If an F8X with a carbon driveshaft needs a replacement driveshaft after the switch-over date, will it get a carbon one or the new steel one?

Seems like it will get the new steel one.

Ain't that some cost-cutting shit...

CF on this car was hyped up like crazy and now they're getting rid of CF parts. A drive shaft even.

This is bad.

Like I say, volume. Regulatory conditions often specify an average over all units, so typically you can get away with some outliers. Naturally they will attack and optimize the volume seller first. Now, as I've already alluded to, sure, this also plays conveniently into the marketing of the CS. Conspiracy? Nah, but of course the automakers are shrewd and know how to game the system to their advantage. I blame the politicians for these loopholes, because I always blame the easy target.

There's always one.

I can't get contrast stitching to match my wife's favorite lipstick so I am going to go buy a different car that also doesn't offer that option just to stick it to the man!

Nope. Feel free to be suspicious and certainly vote with your wallet - you have that right as a consumer. But regulatory concerns are no joke, and they are relentlessly and merciless changing in favor of gradually phasing out the ICE. Prepare for PHEV to be the new turbocharging because soon the legislative bodies across the globe will see to it that it costs more to build a pure ICE car than a hybrid. But the good news is, cars keep getting quicker and quicker. There's a silver lining in everything (except a reversible jacket).

Go read the media's experiences with the press cars and you'll see the problem (and then go discuss it in the proper thread ).
