Aluminum blade or Carbon fiber interior trim?
Just wanted to ask if anyone knows for sure whether the carbon fibre interior trim is made of real carbon fibre or not. My dealer told me that, yes, for the first time in the M3 it is real carbon fibre, but somehow I am not convinced, as it felt quite plasticy

From what I have seen at the Montreal car show, yes, it seems to be real carbon fibre and it does look very good.

Yes, carbon fiber is just a cloth (typically) - it doesn't achieve its properties until embedded in plastic resin, hence the term CFRP.

As the trim doesn't save any weight and it's only purpose is aesthetics, these pieces may very wel be made of plastic and covered by one layer of CF.
Even then, who cares? Still looks good right? Gloss CF trim > leather CF every day |

You may want to search it out and have a look. The dash piece is predominantly alcantara and has the M Performance logo on it. It is a bit polarizing. I believe the intention is to somewhat match the M Sport Alcantara seats (which incidentally are not even available in US M Sport cars anyway).
I want non-shiny CF myself, so I've been thinking a lot about how I could modify that piece to make more sense. My current thought is to replace the Alcantara part with Carbon Anthracite cloth to match the seats I will be getting. Not sure of the difficulty level there, but it might make a cool DIY. |

You're in luck. It is possible to separate the dash piece into two parts and customize (..F3X owners have taken it apart in the past and mixed & matched with other trim pieces). I would prefer Carbon Leather myself though. I'm not a fan of the shiny CF bits. I grew out of that in my Honda days. Last edited by Sedan_Clan; 03-05-2014 at 11:19 AM.. |

Yeah, I saw that in fact. However, I haven't seen anyone replace the Alcantara part of the M Performance trim with another material. It's probably going to be a bit more involved than simply switching the finishing strip to the MSport blue one (for example).

If anybody is capable of doing it, you are. I think it would look absolutely fresh to have the trim material match the seat material.

I hope it is also real metal on the F8X. I have not seen it yet, so I cannot confirm. I am debating between a silverstone interior with CF trim or a black interior with the aluminum blade trim. |

You can see what the texture looks like on page 24 of the German catalog: http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/att...7&d=1393525185 To me, its not so good. Don't know why BMW always seems to put a funky pattern on their aluminum trims. For my tastes, I'd happily take the simplicity of the base Blue Shadow trim (also seen in the above catalog) over the three available upgrades if it were available in the US. Sure its plastic, but I still prefer its looks over the others. Thank you for the vote of confidence. The other tricky part may be getting BMW to sell me a bit of the material or figuring out who supplies it to them and buying it straight from the source. |

Or at the very least, find an upholstery place that offers a similar material and have them wrap it.
