On the BMW site, they are offering Aluminum BRUSH -- not blade....do you happen to know if they are the same thing or is the brush supposed to not have the lines in it?

(Having seen both AB & CF trims on M4's in the flesh) Just a word of warning - "Aluminium Blade" is not a "Brushed Aluminium" trim finish with lines in it, it's the same "foil" finish as "Aluminium Hexagon" available on the M Sport line but with lines rather than hexagons.
On an M Sport I would always choose "Brushed Aluminium" over "Aluminium Hexagon" as I personally think the latter has a very cheap "foil" look and feel - Hence why I've gone CF on my M4 ("Brushed Aluminium" is not avaialble on the M4 aside from the fact that the CF trim is the real deal, looks awesome, is unique to the M4 over the rest of the 4 series range and ties in with the CF roof).

Is there anyway to protect the clearcoat finish on the CF trim to prevent it from swirling up like crazy?
To me it's the most attractive trim offered here, and it is very attractive indeed, but I know the surface finish is not going to wear well with even careful use. |

I have cf on my s4. Just use a microfiber and you'll be fine. nearly 75k miles later and whatever microscratches there may be don't bother me at all. I do hobbiest level detailing for backround.

I saw the alum trim this weekend on a F80 I test drove. I am not a huge fan of CF on everything at all but I have to say it's much better than the alum in my opinion. I was considering the alum too until I saw it in person. It belongs in a 3-4 series just not in a M in my opinion. Extended leather and this trim will look kinda cheap compared to the CF in my opinion.

I asked if there was any way to protect it, and you give me advice on how to clean it. Your advise may not be free, but it isn't good either |

They are one in the same really, and I was poking (..as I usually do). I gave you advice on how to protect it from scratches/blemishes, which is what most people refer to when we're discussing interior trim. What are you gonna do, clear bra your CF trim?

Ok, let me use small words for you
I'm concerned about clearcoated carbon fiber trim's propensity to swirl-up in normal everyday use, not during clean or wipe down, but just in the process of being brushed against by - say - the buttons on the bottom of my cuff . I asked if, "there anyway to protect the clearcoat finish on the CF trim to prevent it from swirling up like crazy" Note, not how to prevent swirling it when cleaning. But how to protect it in general. You provided solid advice on how to not swirl it up when cleaning it. Good stuff. Now, yes, I'm interested in actual daily protection. I would consider clear-bra'ing |

Serious question though, at what point would you brush up against trim (..with your button cuff or anything else)? I can't think of one time ever that I've brushed up against any trim pieces. |

Serious answer: I was actually serious about the buttons at the bottom of my cuffs on my right sleeve, whether standard or french cuff.
I drive M/T and I use I-drive. I don't delicately hold my arm up in the air at all moments, I frequently allow my elbow to rest on the middle arm rest. This puts shirt cuff, for example, in contact with the area around the shifter and i-drive controller occasionally. Now this is just one example. Plenty of other times you'd be touching that trim. Now the trim on the dash? No big deal. The trim on the doors does get some contact - for example you might press your backside shod in jeans into them, and denim can scuff clearcoat pretty easily. I owned an e39 m5 with bruyere wood trim with 127k miles on it. The dash trim looked fine, the trim around the shifter was fine but the clearcoat was worn looking. I also own a 2007 V10 Touareg with beautiful glossy wood trim in it where on the doors it has some marks in the clearcoat. The big difference is the marks in clearcoat on wood trim show up LESS than marks in clearcoated carbon fiber. Hence why I'm asking. |

It's plastic. Treat it like plastic. Don't rub it, brush it, or dry hump it with anything abrasive. You could wax it. Otherwise, just get a mini-brush guard and mount it to the air vents.
