The only M engine I truly enjoy the sound of is the S85 M5 V10.

THAT engine was the high point of BMW's M engines. With an exhaust system it really sounded like an F1.

IF BMW had put one a redeveloped version of their V10 or even a high-revving V8 in the new M4 coupe I would have traded my Z for one. In Australia these cars cost well into the six figures - over $180k so sound means a lot to me as part of the overall experience! Now will wait for the AMG C63 COUPE as M4 is definitely out of my list. Also the new Jag F-Type interests me but wonder about its quality.

A new stock F8X owner should do a sound comparison to a stock E9X.

The comparison would include same conditions, microphone, camera, driver and attempt to accelerate in a similar fashion. And it would be good to see these at idle, in cabin, launch, drive by.

And we could all then tell how the stock F8X compares.

From the testimonials of some new owners the F8X sounds exotic and even better than expected.

These early mods and aggressive efforts to improve on the 'new' are not making sense to me.

OP, the car sounds cheap with this gutting job.

Yeah, I feel like my sister's 135i STOCK sounds better than the M4... The 135i retained the i6 sound and added turbo sounds... The M4 just sounds... disappointing... Looks gorgeous though..

Ok, I found out more info. When you cut/interrupt the wire to the exhaust valves... they LOCK or FREEZE in the position they are in. So my friend first puts the car in SPORT MODE, then throws his switch to "freeze" the exhaust valves in the louder mode(then goes in cofomfort or eco or what have you.

He is also working on a coding solution... but so far his "switch" does the job quite nicely.

Dackel
Sounds like a complete waste of time. Why even bother with all that mess? You should have your friend just go buy a real exhaust instead of hacking up a brand new M4.... We're all disappointed with the results of this hack job man. Just letting you know in case you missed the 4 pages of the "it sounds horrible" posts.

Why? Made it sound worse...also it looks like they removed the cross over. Thats got to hurt low end and midrange torque. Not that the F8X S55 isn't lacking any.

I own both a 2011 E90 M3 and a 2015 F80 M3. egad, the F80 M3 sounds like crap. It becomes less offensive once you are actually accelerating on the throttle and fairly guttural 4000rpm + but it's not a good sounding car. It sounds like a diesel at idle as well.

The E90 M3 is far and above the better sounding car. But, it's waaaaay slower. Like noticeably even in day to day driving.

Sounding like crap or not... I still can't get my head around why anyone would go through the trouble of hiding a resonator bypass.

In the M5, you could take a metal wire and wire the flap open to make it stay open permanently. It was a 5 minute mod which I had in my M5 as well. Can you do the same in the M3? It may not be that easy because the flap was all the way at the end in the M5, in the M3, it looks like you have to lift the car a lot and go under.

Thank you kitw for the sincere reply. I do not even drive my cars so fast, and the e90 is simply great for that awesome cruising sound. I did not imagine it would be a win for the turbo six in the F80, but it seems like a fair comparison to bring closure to the discussion on sound.

So the F80 is that much faster, huh? It sounds like a super fun car.

I think the objective in change is to enjoy it as it is, and not to hope to keep the best of the past and the future. But rather, it is better to accept the F80 as a different car.

Regardless of how this mod sounds, I, for one, want to thank the OP for giving this mod a try. The more people that try mods the better off we'll all be in search of a good solution that will benefit everyone.

So - THANKS OP!

you need to mod the E90 if you want good sound and also be able to keep up/beat newer cars out.

I agree. For anyone who is interested, the 135i essentially got "OEM Exhaust Mod - Non perforated" if you want to look it up on the E9x M3 threads. I had this done to my '13 M3 Convertible and it sounds AMAZING and only cost me $350! It's the best money I ever spent on a car, especially when you consider how cheap it was!

Also, theoretically, being in Sport or Sport+ mode on the new M3/M4 appears to be equivalent (ie. bypassing the chamber) to the OEM Exhaust Mod - Non Perforated that I mentioned above.

With the positive + negative reviews, I'm certainly looking forward to hearing the new M3/M4 in-person in Sport or Sport+ mode. I am definitely concerned that it will be a huge downgrade in terms of sound vs the E9x M3 but I'm reserving my opinion until I hear it in-person.

Happy July 4th to everyone!
Jeremy
this is my oem mod. it cost me only $17!

dackel what camera and mic was used?

i like the raspy. my video is a gopro with external mic. wondering if it truly sounds similar.
