Did any of the reviews complain about the Active Sound - I mean did they notice it?

I can imagine a world where the latest M3/4/5/6 did not have Active Sound. In that world, the same people who think A.S. is bad would complain that they cannot hear the engine noise. They may even request BMW should have made a system to provide a little more volume.

In product design, the engineers must follow guidelines created by product planners, management, and others. These groups decide what the consumer "wants" and what the product "needs" to be successful. In the case of the latest M3/4, the decision was more induction noise. The designers delivered their best solution.

And in that world fake noise pumped through the speakers would be a new problem, not a solution

When Chris Harris reviewed the Boxster S he commented that the car and the software felt like at every turn when the engineers (and their upstream management) had to choose they chose what would make the car more fun to drive.

This active sound decision feels like BMW chose the dumbarses over those who see AS as a new problem and not a solution ... that's why it's not configurable.

Clearly, if the problem is lack of induction noise volume, one solution is Active Sound, regardless if anyone likes it.

The boxster is not even close to the same type of car as an M3/4.

The "dumbarses" includes all who do not FULLY understand the problem OR BMW's solution; which is everyone in this thread.

I guess that's an argument for or against. What I'm saying is... I don't care what they do so long as there IS that "iconic sports car". I'm not sure we can say the M3/4 is it.

PS: I wasn't talking about exhaust note. I used the general term "sound" since the people bitching about the "sound" of the F8X talk about both the induction noise and exhaust.
I wasn't replying to you as much as the actual article. The noise replication is only really required for induction since you can always plumb a louder exhaust. So when they are talking about exhaust note, but referencing a 2-3% sound enhancement.. it's all a bit confusing. Strikes me more as a marketing piece.

And my argument about the 918, 911, etc. is that Porsche is selling the farm but still making that core enthusiast vehicle that is still outrageous and (nearly) uncompromising. It was more a statement about the company itself, not so much the car.

The wording in the OP might be confusing, but they actually say that the exhaust sound is "real" and that exhaust valves make it almost a straight through system (when open). The bit where they talk about the exhaust has nothing to do with the bit about Active Sound (apart from the reference to the exhaust being "real" and not electronically enhanced).

I did have to read it twice myself to get that the second paragraph was only about the exhaust and had nothing to do with the "2-3% Active Sound" bit.

they might sound virtually the same but I don't want fake anything, there should be an iDrive option to fully turn it off, let the car sound naturally..if it's a turbo let it sound like a turbo car ffs
