Photosynth 3D Parallax Effect Panorama “Spin” of Silverstone M4 – 1st Test

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I’ve been exploring the new Microsoft Photosynth Tech Preview Site that will “Stitch” together a number of photos to create a 3D like composite using the Parallax Effect.

This Photosynth “Spin” I created is made up of 64 individual photos and rotates around an object inwards (The SS M4). The trick is to maintain the same focal length, height, and area of focus. As you can see I started to lose both on the tail end of the car.

My next test will be to do an entire 360 Degree Spin Synth on the Car in a setting that has larger Structures in the backround and better lighting to enhance the 3D Parallax effect.

I tried to embed the Synth into the post, but Silverlight doesn’t seem to play nice with this Vbulletin.

Here’s a link to the Synth. If you press play the Synth will rotate around the center access, if paused it will revert to the primary picture in the frame. You’ll need Microsoft Silverlight to view the Synth.

Thanks! I know it doesn't compare to some of the more professional photosynth's that people have posted of famous landmarks on the Microsoft website, but practice makes perfect. That and theirs don't have an M4 in them.

Love it! The last part makes it look like a transformer ... next up the interior?

Very cool. I used my HTC One to make a 3D photo effect of that exact car a couple of weeks ago when I drove it...I still have it on my phone.

Definitely , but I'm going to drive the M4 over to the Ocean where there are some tall Condos, so the outside view through the windshield has something to scale against on the Panorama Photosynth.

Mil405, you did a great job taking so many pictures to make this spin! It is especially satisfying to see this because 2 years ago I worked on the Photosynth team to bridge this Microsoft Research project into commercialization with the Photosynth service.

The algorithm doesn't work as well with trees and foliage. That's why you see more tearing between the car and the small bush next to it. If you have time to do it again, try to shoot the car in a wide open area. What helps too is to leave spaces on the left and right of the car in the pictures. For example, don't zoom in and fill the pictures with the whole car. The stitching works better that way.

Silverstone II looks so good!

Thank you for the advice; here’s hoping I can put it to good use!

The difference between the older style panorama Photsynth’s and this new Tech Preview site technology are amazing.

The “Walks” and “Walls” posted of Town’s and Landmarks are incredibly immersive.

I’m going to get the car to an open space and mark off the distances so I don’t deviate on focal length or distance for sure on the next Spin I try. This one was 64 pics I think, it looks like some of the good one’s on the Microsoft site are about 145+ pics for a full 360-degree.

Thank you! Really gives us the depth of the actual car without seeing it in person

Cool, here's a pretty helpful video.

I wish I could find some time to do a full 360 video.

The oddest part will be your neighbors looking at you wondering why you're taking 100+ pictures of your car with an expression on their faces like, "Wow, this person must really like their Freakin car."

Nice job!

You also need to go full manual on the camera to get rid of the flickering effect
