Google Play Music track info not displaying in iDrive
I can't figure out why the track info (artist and song title) is not displaying in iDrive while playing music through Bluetooth on my Android. I don't remember if this ever worked on my 2018 but I'm pretty sure it worked on my 2016 M4. I am not aware of any settings within the phone or app to control this. Another strange thing is that if I play music or a video through the YouTube app the song/video info displays fine.
I don't think it has anything to do with my phone because this works fine in my wife's car (non-BMW). Any ideas? |

I do occasionally [read: rarely] see this issue when playing GPM on my iPhone but it's typically just a little glitch and fixes itself if I play around with it.
If you haven't already, I might suggest trying to re-pair the phone although it is odd that it only happens when using Google Play Music... |

I gave up with android and my M4 - I now have an old iPhone plugged into the USB constantly - I use the hotspot from my android and stream spotify/deezer wired over USB from the old iPhone. Android is not worth the headache imo.

Damn I should have tried this just to see if carplay is better. I just sold my old iPhone 6. My only real issue with my Note 8 is that I can't play or pause. I always get track info though through Spotify.

Spotify and Pandora seem to have a higher success rate ( they are supported in the 'connected' app from what i can tell). Wired android yields no better results. Will def try the hard wired iphone trick.

Pretty much every other vehicle manufacturer has done a better job of interfacing phones with in-car entertainment systems than BMW has.
I read somewhere that BMW's official position on this issue and other similar interface issues were due to the phone manufacturers not adhering to Bluetooth standards. My car was just in for service and everytime it goes in I complain about Bluetooth connectivity. This time, the dealer tells me that BMW has admitted there is an issue and is working on a software update to address and that I should wait until the car is in again. Not holding my breath, but must admit that I am utterly disappointed in this aspect of both my X5 and M4. Everytime I rent a car, it grinds salt into the wound when my phone works flawlessly with the rental's infotainment system.

Vehicle: MY14 F80.
iDrive version: TBC. Phone: HTC 10 Andoid version: 8.0.0 Bluetooth version:8.0.0 I've found the issue more to be with the phone than the car. The issue was repeatable on my ex's F20LCI 120i also. The phone also never connected to my old ELM Bluetooth-ODB reader with Torque where as an old Samsung Galaxy 2 did/does. From time to time, the phone will pair with the vehicle successfully then when I select 'media' it'll drop off the connections list, re-appear, and start functioning correctly. However, there has been times that track info hasn't displayed, or track listings in the HUD have been out of sync/repetitive. Seems to have been fixed for the time being by flushing the bluetooth cache on the phone via: Settings>Apps (show system)> Bluetooth > Clear Data/cache. FWIW, there's 2 bluetooth options under system apps. I clear them both. Wouldnt surprise me if BMW were just advancing the bluetooth firmware at the same rate of Apple releases given the large variance in versions across the android market. |

I saw the same issue with Android 8.1 when using Apple Music. What fixed it for me (I'm getting artist/title, but no album art yet) is go into settings and find the battery optimisation page. Disable battery optimsation for bluetooth (I think theres bluetooth and bluetooth MIDI) and Play Music (or whatever app you're using for music.) You can also try enabling developer settings and within the developer settings changing the AVRCP version to 1.3.

Anyone getting album art with google play music? I think it's just not supported (I have pure android -- google pixel). Works perfectly in my Audi...
I knew this car didn't have android auto, but I didn't know just how bad basic android integration is.

No Album art here.
I've since noticed that turning bluetooth off/on in iDrive fixes the track listing in the HUD/cluster though. Issue seems to vary whether i'm playing from the last playlist i had when connected to the car or starting a new one. When starting a new one, with the 'Media' menu up, i can see the car drop the connection to the phone (or vice versa) whilst the new playlist is called up on the phone and then reconnect to begin playback. HUD/Cluster playlist scrolling is typically thrown out at this point. Anyone with the same issue? |
