GTS Carbon Fiber Wheel Damage
This is a note of caution and a desire to understand other owner's experience.
The BMW Carbon Fiber Wheels are geting scored on the inside of the wheel due to rocks and/or other debris getting wedged between the caliber and the wheel. Unlike the standard Acid Orange wheels, the gap between the wheel and the caliper is approx 3/8 inch. If the scoring penetrates the protective coating and scores the carbon fiber, the wheels may no longer be safe. BMW is aware of the issue and is studying the issue. I highly recommend that you examine your wheels for damage and share your findings an any actions taken by BMW. Thanks! |

If anyone is wondering what the fix is it will likely be a new wheel. I spoke with s vendor who sells CF wheels and we touched on damage and what the fix would be. There is no way to fix CF that keeps it structurally sound.

I knew that would be an issue with the 19s in the front after seeing them at the LA autoshow in person and also with my prior M3. Those are the reasons why I didn't even think about paying the 15k for the cf wheels. There was a debate saying the cf wheels are more exclusive and might drive up the resale value, but I see it the other way around. The GTS looks better with the orange wheels and when the wheels get gouged, its almost just a cosmetic issue that can be dealt with easily.

I don't believe there will be a solution. This is my 3rd F8x since 2014 all with CCB's and all gouged front wheels and calipers. :

Serious Issue
I have had this happen to my carbon wheels on more than one occasion. It is an inexcusable design defect. It is disconcerting when one drives though debris that is unavoidable and more disconcerting when you see the gouge on the wheels. So far, BMW has not come up with a solution, other than putting 20s on the fronts. It would be easy with the regular wheels because they already exist in the unpainted version. The carbon wheels are another matter. Performance would be sacrificed. BMW should work this issue out.

Also experienced front wheel gouging on Acid Orange wheels, local dealer has opened a PuMA case with Munich, time will tell if they do anything about it.

Just had confirmation that BMW UK have agreed to replace both front wheels as a gesture of goodwill!! Obviously doesn't solve the problem though,

This has been a cosmetic issue on non-GTS cars with 18" standard wheels, and those that have CCB with 19" 437Ms. Even the M2 Comp with the larger (gray) 6 piston brakes have a very small amount of clearance between the barrel and caliper.
Obviously it is more of an issue in the structural integrity case of CF GTS wheels, but the same problem has been around since the introduction of the F8x. |
