I started modding crazy on 335is when I got it year ago. Now that I have deposit down for M3, I took out everything to sell them. I lost a lot of money, but it was pretty fun experience.
I don't plan to go mod crazy on new M3. This is because I am getting first year model. I want BMW to figure out all the bugs out and apply to my car before I mod. Initially, I will only do minor exterior mod like carbon fiber spoiler, diffuser, front lip, color matching side marker and maybe carbon fiber side mirrors. |

Wow dinh335, you're exactly where I was in 1998!! I had modded my (Alpine White) 325i to the point where I was convinced I'd built my own M3. I'd done my first DE and I'd kept up with all the M3's in my (novice) group - PROOF!
Then BMW announced $1,000 off M3's for CCA members, so I thought I'd go drive one and prove myself right for sure. Boy was I surprised! The M3 did simply everything just a little better than my "M3". As a package, it was a lot better. I owned one a month later, and I've never looked back. It's been a great 15 years, and I can't wait for my Alpine White F-coded M3. Just some aged wisdom for you to consider...

I've found equal parts satisfaction and dis-satisfaction with modding. A set of sway bars gives nice body roll reduction and neutral handling, but suddenly I have an occasional bushing squeak because of the bushings that came with it....
The short shifter is very satisfying to drive aggressively, but suddenly the car is unpleasantly difficult to shift when very cold. etc. For these reasons, I've cut back a lot over the ages and now focus on spending the right amount of money upfront to buy a truly great car spec'd the way I want it. |

Doesn't matter if you have a 335 or M3, either you're a modder or you're not. So, if you get an M3 and you're a modder, you can bet that you will mod that M3 whether you want to or not

It started with a harmless little turbo turner. I was blown away about how easily a turbo car could be manipulated to increase boost and make substantially more power and torque. Just make the car think it's driving in the mountains when driving on the plains and voila, more power.
Then I got Dinan Stage 1. Then I got the exhaust and FMIC and Stage 2. Then it was an upgraded oil cooler and Stage 3. Then I though it could use some coiovers, and on went the KW v3's. After that I thought I should get a boost gauge, then a BMW Performance steering wheel, then a shifter, then an aluminum kick plate and pedal covers. After that I thought some Morr's would be nice. From there I went with the Dinan CAI. After that I left the Dinan software tuning for the the Cobb family and then decided I should get high flow catted downpipes. But that wasn't enough so I got some RB Turbos. I stopped short of getting meth, thinking I finally have enough. But that is what I said about my very first mod. So now I am poised to take a major bath on my 335xi and doing ED on the M4. I am hoping that the M4 will be the antidote to my mod addiction. Out of the box it should be very close to what I was able to achieve in power with my 335, and should be set up from the factory for better handling. Hey do you guys think the M4 could be tuned easy say with a piggyback just to add a notch more power from the turbos? Just a notch, mind you, to, you know, up the performance a tad?

But it sounds interesting to hear several people did in fact mod less once they landed in an M.

Everyone has a mod bug, but as for me i like m cars to be bone stock, likely they will be underrated from factory like the m5/m6, they have enough power to get you going crazy.

M3s have always been cars that need very few mods. Your favorite wheels and exhaust, and a modest drop is typically all that's necessary. With the turbo, there's likely cheap power to be had with a piggyback - that's what I'd add to the F8x list. Otherwise, I expect the new cars to be similarly great out of the box.

I'm too am done with modding. it was fun to do before.....did it with the TT. it's not fun to spend so much on a car which doesn't really gain any value. it's also bothersome to maintain. everything with uneven wear.
I've realized it's way better to just start off with a better car out of the box. so in your situation----get the M3. |
