More power to BMW for not forgetting about the purists.
For now. BMW is heading there also just at a slower pace.

funny you mention this at about the same time they announce bmw is saying bye-bye to MT and DCT (at least about the time I read the thread about it...front page bimmerpost news)

so I did sit in a new S4 today ... I was REALLY impressed by the new interior. excellent job on that. I didn't drive it but assume i'll find it to be enjoyable but not as exciting as the F80s. Since you can get an S4 for $50k after negotiations and minimal options, I may look into it since the M3 wouldn't be my primary track car now anyway.

Wife and I were just at the NY auto show and take a hard look at the S4. It's been growing on my as of late. The interior is super nice and it would be a nice change for us as we have been rocking the 335/340 xDrives for winter/skiing cars for a while now.

Taking away the DCT in this model does annoy me though. My buddy had the last S5 and he loved the DCT. He's a long time Audi guy and might just be moving on from the brand because of the DCT changes with Audi.

I drove his TTRS. Now that car was awesome.

I will leave this gentleman's S5 Sportback from (one of) the Audi forums. Looks beautiful if you asked me.

If you are looking for a commuter then I really wouldn't look further. However coming from a B8.5 S4 myself, the handling characteristics are completely different between the two. If you're expecting something at the level of the M3 I think you'd be disappointed. Also at highway speeds, obviously the S4 runs out of steam far quicker which was painfully noticeable to me in a number of overtaking situations. The M3 just keeps pulling.

the smaller platform is fun ... sure ... I am not sure how the RS3 will be but in my S3 it feels like I sit so high it's annoying and feels less sporty than it should. I feel much lower in the S4 which is nice. the extra space is also appreciated as I'm 6'3" 230lbs. for flicking the car around the S3 is fun but the S4 would be a nice and decently fun commuter, but not my primary fun car. however, I'll say that when the time comes I'll likely go with an M3 again.

Just like Ferrari doing away from manuals

Manuals and DCTs disappearing from M cars?

The first pick looks like a Dodge Charger profile, and the second like a ford Fusion. I dont like any of the newer body lines, regardless to the model- but I did just lease a new Q3 for my girl.. soooo I cant say I dislike "all" now can I?!

As far as future M cars doing away from manual gear boxes... well I'll either hold onto my current car for longer, or I'll just say bye-bye to BMW and go to another that offers the 6MT+ option. For those who say they will miss the DCT... dont get your panties in a bunch, I'm sure whatever they replace it with will compliment the car nicely.

These just look like pancaked crossovers to me. Or a 3 series GT. And that's not a compliment.

Doesn't look that good to me. Maybe it looks better IRL, or at different angles.

I guess we got different tastes. I was digging it the way it resembles the A7 model line. Now if one doesn't like the way the A7 looks I suppose this won't do it for them either.

I think the A7 looks good from certain angles, but not all (which is true for most cars). The fewer unflattering angles, the better looking the car, is one way to frame it.

The S5 sportback in the photos above may look better IRL, but based on those pictures, doesn't do it for me. I believe this is mostly due to the photos, as I can imagine, based on the lines, it being a good looking car.

I'll take an RS4 wagon all day long over a "sportback" (especially the slightly older RS4 with the fender flares)
