Arrow F8X >> My take on the 7 of 8 colors I was able to see today - Picture Heavy!

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Update: 08/05/14 > So after seeing 3 more Mineral Grey's in different conditions (Sunny, Cloudy and running down the highway), I have to bump it up to #2 I noticed that in the sun you can totally make out the CF roof which was my only concern for this color. Looks absolutely gorgeous with a SO interior

So went to Bimmerfest on the east coast today and my whole purpose of going here was to be able to see all the colors for the M3/M4 in person. Barring Silverstone I was able to see the remaining 7 colors. I don't feel I missed out on the Silverstone because I have seen it on the E9X and never was a fan of the baby blue hue in it. Just a personal choice
The main goal today was to finalize or atleast shortlist my color choice before I plan my Euro Delivery for early next year

Happy to say........Mission accomplished

Before I give my thoughts on each color, please remember that these are my choices. By no means am I bashing another person's color choice. Color and exhaust sound are extremely subjective so please don't take my comments personally if you disagree or have bought a color that I didn't like

One last thing, some of the pictures may seems repetitive and that's on purpose as they were shot at different times of the day using two different lenses plus some were shot with the sun out and some when it got cloudy. Idea here is to show how different a color can look depending on camera used/weather, etc. Didn't get many pictures on the SO as I caught to it very late.

I'll post the pictures in order of my color preference.....from worst to best

#7 Austin Yellow

Yes, I do somewhat agree with Jeremy Clarkson on this. Not quite baby diarrhea but certainly not my color of choice. This color was just too loud for me and I'll leave it at that. I think it looks a lot better in pictures than in person. This can be spotted from a mile away, and not necessarily in a good way I only like it slightly better than the Phoenix Yellow in the E46 M which I totally despised

#6 Sakhir Orange

This looks more like a rust color. Another one of those colors that looks a lot better in pictures. Didn't look bad overall and I don't think there is anything particularly wrong with this color but I was never into the rust looking colors. Some people will love it but it's just not for me.

#5 Yas Marina Blue

So I was a bit pleasantly surprised by this color. In person, it is infact a really nice looking color. It shines really nicely has an interesting tone to it. BUT that's where the problem is, it is a really nice color if you just think in terms of the color. Put it on a M3/4 and suddenly I don't dig it as much. It is definitely not the light baby blue but it sure is bordering on it. It was good to have that M5 next to it as that car is a really good example of the baby blue color The last picture shows how much darker it is than the baby blue on the M5. Again some people may totally love YMB but it's just not for me.

#4 Black Sapphire

Absolutely stunning color in person. Has a really nice metallic look to it.Black has been my #1 choice for all my cars but here are the reasons it doesn't work for me:

- After moving to the north east I realized a black car is impossible to maintain
- This was a brand new car and I could already see really minor surface scratches. Everything shows on a black car
- I couldn't tell it has CF roof. It merges in with the black color.
- Never noticed this till some of you forum folks pointed it out and after looking at a black car, I agree....I could not see most of the lines on the car especially the big one on the door. Black is not good at showing the nice curvy lines of the car. I could barely tell the curtains in the bumper.

There are numerous threads on Mineral White vs Alpine White. For most of the population that is not into BMW's or cars in general, they won't be able to tell the difference. One thing I would certainly stress on is that if you want to compare these colors, make sure you look at them on the F8X you plan to buy and not on a X5, 5 series or any other car. The same color doesn't go with every car. Based on the feedback from all the MW vs AW threads I was leaning towards the Mineral White even before getting to Bimmerfest. So to keep it fair, I decided to see all the white F8X cars in the show and make mental notes about the car I liked more. Trust me, if you have never seen these colors before you will not know for sure which is which. So I had no clue which was MW and which was AW. I saw 5 different F8X cars in white and after noting down the ones I liked, I asked the owners what they were and the remaining rankings should tell you what happened

#3 Mineral White

Yes this may surprise a lot of folks but like I said earlier, color is matter of choice and differs from person to person. Tried really hard to like this color but it just didn't cut it for me. Here are the reasons I didn't dig it as much:

- Does look soft like a pearly white. It is hard to describe but it has somewhat of a satin look. For those who don't know, satin is used to describe a cloth weave that typically has a glossy surface and a dull back.
- Does have a nice rich look to it. However, it is something I don't necessarily want associated with my nice sports car
- Looks a little dull if not kept clean. One of the Mineral Whites I saw had this look and on swiping a finger I noticed the shiny pearl color below. Looks like it needs some regular cleaning to look good.

That said, you can't go wrong with this color. It does look really good but just not what I am looking for.

#2 Mineral Grey

So after seeing more Mineral Grey's in the week following Bimmerfest, I had to move this up to #2. This color is absolutely gorgeous I had the opportunity to see a few more MG cars on the road and it looks absolutely stunning.

#1 Alpine White

So Alpine White it had to be What finally sealed the deal for me was this F80 M3 belonging to an older gentleman. It is the one parked between the YMB M4 and the MG M4 Vert. I literally kept an eye on that car waiting for the owner to come back so I could ask him if it was Mineral white or Alpine white. I almost expected him to say MW but was pleasantly surprised to know this one was AW as well. My other two choices turned out to be AW after asking the owners and I was waiting only on this one. So it was 3 out of 3 The other AW M4 looked really really sharp as well but something about the 4 door in AW totally sold it to me Something about this color really makes it stand out especially with the Carbon Fiber roof.

Something extra that I realized :

- I do like the M3 more than the M4. love Love Love 4 doors and it looks better

- Love the Sakhir Orange Interior

With that I would like to wrap this up. I hope this helps someone trying to make up their mind but I strongly encourage everyone to go see the color in person.

Cheers

Very cool post, thanks for taking the time to share.

As for not listing silver stone.. Will give benefit of the doubt and assume it simply wasn't there today.

Sorry guys. You are right, it wasn't there. But I didn't miss it because I would place it right after Sapphire Black. It has the baby blue hue that I don't like. Again it's a personal thing. I'll edit the thread title.

Thanks for the heads up. Was writing this after a really long day

Great post, thanks. Did you see the Mineral Grey with the Sakhir Orange interior? I'm considering this combo, but are unsure. I will have my window's tinted (live in Austin), so you won't really see them together that much.

Thanks.

Yes, absolutely beautiful That car looked really sharp. It is the same car pictured above. Here is a shot of the awesome interior in two different lights shot using different lenses I think SO goes really really well with MG.

Great post, thanks! I am also deciding for next year. I'm a fan of Q cars and gray colors so it will be MG for me. However, I'm hoping BMW will release some more colors next year. I love the Sterling Gray on my M5 and the Silver Gray on my M coupe...love Space Gray as well.

Nice choice, classic color can't go wrong. Looks better in person also. Ended up with mg my last one was aw. At the end of the day to each their own a lot complain about lack of contrast with mg but the more subtle look I prefer.white amd black started to be a little harsh of a contrast after 4 yrs of it on e92.maybe I just needed a change-up

the real car is the E30 M in the background. we own a blue m4 and its on the independence II now. BLUE sight unseen. couldnt have a deravation of comon white or black (been there done that). couldn't do anything yellow or orange (but love my inca orange 2002) so blue was the only thing left and we love it. its the "M4 color" in my humble opnion. 2 weeks of driving 1450 miles through germany and the twisties of austria above kitxbuhel added with efortless 140 on the autobahn while keeeping it under 5grand rpm. as an instructor, i track a very red stripped, caged, massively loud E30 S14 with solid alu. motor mounts that throbs and twitches with the intensity of a cheta in heat. the M4 is surely quicker and much more refined but no whare near the viseal excitment and controlled ballance of the much older sibling.

but i digress, the M4 color blue has comunity stoping power. workers on the street, boys in engeering school hanging out windows drooling, audi drivers solwing down form 150 to 120 just to give a thumbs up for 4 miles, masses at the puma factory, boys running with camera phones to catch a video, bmw dealership mechanics stopping to take it in... these are a few of my favorite things. do i buy a car to stand out? no. do i love the color blue? be bold. jump in. the waters fine. as tonymiabmw says "its awesome in person"

Too bad man! My SSII was at Bimmerfest today, and you missed it! It's the best color, but I'm biased.

I just knew you would end up with AW at the end. It really does look stunning with the SO Interior at least you could see the all the cars colors ahead of time as I only got to see launch colors and BSM before ordering. I also like the MG A lot with the SO.
