It is raspy. But not a nice rasp, tinny sounding. Could just be because it is being recorded on a phone camera.

That exhaust really does sound terrible, and I'm not even very particular about exhaust sounds. I'm quite aware that a cell phone camera does not properly capture detailed sound, but it does capture it well enough to reveal the overall tone. This is not one of the better sounding BMW engines. Some may like it, but there is a whole lot of rasp in there.

Stock e46 m3 sounded terrible, I'm prepared for it to sound like crap.

I'm more concerned that as the exhaust revved up (indicating notable throttle), the OP actually caught up with the m3.

I'm guessing the driver slipped the clutch more than he meant too, probably from being scared to death.
