Have any of you had your car damaged by dealer while in for service?

First, I'd like to express that I really like the dealership from which I purchased my car and keep it serviced. My SAs have always been honest.

I brought my car in for the roof rail recall, and unfortunately as part of the repair process, the body shop damaged the paint on the rail above the driver's side door (which is near where the recall work was effected)

I didn't notice it when I picked the car up, as it was dirty (I'd requested they not wash it, which they respected) but I noticed it as soon as I washed the car at home that evening. The scratch is ~12" long and actually pretty visible when the car is clean. (Below pic I took from my garage doesn't do it justice).

Question for you all: What is fair to ask of the dealership to do?

They've already offered to repair it + full detail (though since I just did a full-day detail on my car and did the ceramic coating, I'm not sure it's value-add to do another detail)

I'm also afraid that paint correction will make this worse, as unfortunately the scratch is fairly deep in many places...

It sucks, but at least they are accepting responsibility. My rear bumper (Sakhir Orange also) had to be replaced and the BMW shop that did the work matched the paint perfectly. I was happy that they did not have to blend into the metal quarter panels.

My entire car is covered in Xpel, so had to let the ne paint cure before I could get it wrapped again. Only drove it home and parked it for 30 days until I took it back to them to put the Xpel on. You may need to do the same thing before coating the area that gets repainted.

It seems they are good to deal with, so I would have them repair it. I think it would be fair that they pay for any paint correction and coating at whoever you use. Their insurance will likely be paying for it unless they choose not to use it.

Working with the metal panels is what scares me, but I guess if they don't do it perfectly they'll have to do it until they get it right. My big concern is how this will impact the value of the car if/when I try to sell it, as repairs usually don't have the same look as factory...

I do my coating myself, so it's just time, but doing it just in that section won't take too long.

Should have no effect on value. It should not be reported to anything like Carfax. Only a paint and body specialist may be able to tell and that should only be if they went looking for areas where masking might have been applied.

Good luck.

SO here as well... so they ordered a non painted bumper and then painted it SO? I have a very small infraction that's only noticeable if you know where to look...but it bothers me so considering options.... new bumper is around $800? But again I thought they sent that all ready painted...

Bumpers are shipped bare, and painted at shops. Had mine replaced at the port after ED (SO color as well), and I couldn't even tell the difference even after my SA told me about it.

SO seems to match well. Technically, the bumper was the second time the car has been repaired. I took a rock on the right front fender during my ED trip the day before I dropped it off. Port repaired it and no one would be able to tell, but they are not the run of the mill body shop either.

That's because the car is brand new. If that happened two years from now after the paint has faded, blending is needed and that's when problems can arise.

But in the industry bumper covers are considered like brake pads, wearable parts.

No, blending is not needed. Any competent shop can match the paint currently on the car. If a shop tells you they want to blend your bumpers into the rest of your car...run!

i once picked up my brand new Audi A4 and there was a dent on the door. Dealership only showed me this after I gave them my certified cheque. Dealer tried wanted to "repair it" but I told them I wanted another one and they found me another vehicle (I took down the VIN of the damaged one).

Crap happens but the key is that you are happy with how you will get compensated, just as long as it's reasonable IMO.

I had an interior piece damaged by a dealer on wife's 335. They fixed it well enough for the car to get through lease return with no issues.

Ask them how they will fix and if you know their detailed is good, go for it.

Great that they are stepping up. I think that's your good relationship with the SA coming through

That looks to be just the clear coat surface. I'd be surprised if paint is required.

Looks very minor and probably can be fixed by power polish.

Blowing this out of proportion. If you can't feel this with your fingernail and it's not to deep, it's just a sanding and buff/polish...
