Lightweight Wheels (HRE R101LW) vs Stock (437) 19" -- worth it?
I am considering the HRE 101LW 19" which weight about 17 and 18 LBS appx front and rear. The cost is over $10K wheels, tires, etc--crazy expensive--spousal unit will have complete meltdown. BBS 19" FI-Rs are just not available for months if not longer, apparently.
My understanding the stock OEM 19" wheels weigh about 23 and 24 lbs (front/rear). So, there is about a total of 20 lbs of weight reduction; unsprung; maybe 5+ lbs per wheel. I plan on installing Michelin SS 265/35/19 MO and 295/35/19 Star * which have been subject of another thread. My M4 is not a DD; rather, a weekend/fun day car; maybe 1-2 tracks days per year. Lots of curvy roads in foothills, Sierras, etc. Occasional week long road trip, etc. QUESTION: Will I really notice an increase in performance/overall ride improvement? Or, Would keeping OEM wheels and just changing the tires alone to 265/295 be sufficient upgrade? Now, factor in the $10K cost? Cost v Benefit analysis. If you have upgraded your F8x wheels---I value your opinion. Or, have some real world experience with these issues---please let me know. I am putting aside aesthetics/looks/cool factor, etc. The HREs look really cool IMO along with some other wheels. As a side: I did recently install the MP Coilovers (HAS)---clearly improved performance over stock springs 100%. Thanks in advance for your feedback. Last edited by VeloF1; 02-02-2017 at 11:03 PM.. |

If you wanted to upgrade your wheels you might have to sacrifice your ride a little bit because you would most definitely want to do a MPSS or PS2 265/35/19 and 305/30/19. I would definitely go with the 10" front and 11" rear. A lightweight set from HRE is what I would do ideally.

if u could lose 5lbs at each corner, that would be noticeable. the lower the unsprung weight, the less work the shocks and springs have to do to keep the tires in contact with the road over bumpy surfaces.

Wheel weight has a significant effect on the cars dynamics. 5+ lbs per corner will be significant.
The biggest difference I noticed was crisper turn in and the car feels lighter on its feet. The car sort of skips along when accelerating. Now whether or not that difference is equal to $10,000 plus is another question. BBS may have some stock coming in at end of the month. Let us know if you'd like us to keep a lookout for you. |

Losing some weight on all four corners of the car would make a difference trackwise, weather or not that is actually worth it on regular road is probably a lot less so.
10k worth? Probably not since most of us don't track in such a fashion to see a big change really. I would say so long as you aren't adding weight to the car, losing some pounds on the wheels would be worth it. 437ms are already very light, BMW did a good job with them. 21 pounds front, I think 22ish pounds on rear.

I prefer the manufacturer has a super solid reputation for quality ( i recently viewed a video of a forgestar destroying catastrophically under racing conditions. Apparently about 12 track days). Car will be occasionally tracked, not DD. Light weight if possible. Black in color. 19" Thanks! |

Volk also creates good wheels for a better price but I'm not personally a fan of the styling on German cars. |

Just never be fooled: buying wheels is an emotional decision, not rational.

Interesting topic. I'm considering lightweight wheels as well. 20" 666M are too harsh and heavy.
