I think I'm going to go this route and zip tie the cables. If the inputs are exposed is it possible for for them to be damaged by the elements?

There is always the possibility of corrosion if you do not protect the plugs. But if you do the above method (pulling the fuses) no need to touch the plugs at the rear of the exhaust.
