Per the article: "The introduction of the new driving cycle WLTP accelerates the end of production for the BMW M3 F80 which will now end in May 2018. Just like all other gasoline engines, the BMW M3 F80 would have to be fitted with an Otto particle filter as of June 1, 2018, but the M Division has chosen to end the production of the fifth M3 generation a little earlier than expected.

The Worldwide harmonized Light vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) defines a global harmonized standard for determining the levels of pollutants and CO2 emissions, fuel or energy consumption, and electric range from light-duty vehicles (passenger cars and light commercial vans).

The production end of the BMW M3 incidentally has no effect on the availability of the M4, the two-door variants will continue as planned and built just like the basic models of the 4 Series a few months longer than the four-door sedan.

The retrofitting of the Otto particle filter is technically very complex, because the OPF requires additional space in the exhaust system. A few months ago, the M Division has announced that it will replace the carbon propeller shaft with a compact structural steel cardan shaft .

This step will continue to be justified, as the production of the BMW M4 Coupe and Convertible will be converted in good time before June 1, 2018, and will continue uninterrupted.

The sixth BMW M3 generation based on the next 3 Series G20 will not be available until 2020, so the F80 M3 might be in high demand on the pre-owned market."
BMWBlog also reported that the WLTP is halting European delivery of the M550i after May 2018.

The M3 CS has 550 units allocated for the US market, great marketing decision by BMW AG to drive F80 sales to the CS after May 2018 as that will be the only option then. No way all 1200 CS vehicles will be produced prior to June 1, 2018, so the Otto particle filter will be fitted into the F80, just like the F30 will have it.

Haha. Will still be doing an ED, just this time for an AMG until the next gen M3 comes out.

I believe that the M3 CS being a limited production vehicle is exempt from the Otto particle filter?

Yep, I believe I read that somewhere along the way in the driveshaft thread (maybe even the article linked in the first post).

And so it begins...the beginning of the end.

Does this mean all F80s will have the carbon shaft?

^The existing F80 M3 will maintain its unique position with carbon drive shaft. Based on that news, everything is about the cost. Why doesn't F87 M2, F90 M5, F12 M6, F85 X5M, or F86 X6M utilize carbon drive shaft or Otto filter?

if I remember correctly, rule of thumb for the size of a particulate filter (GPF) is about 2x displacement; therefore, BMW would need to package 6L of catalyst for the S55. Not an easy task.

M3 to be discontinued in May 2018??

WLTP appears to be killing the M3.

If you think this is nuts, you should see what's going on with Porsche right now trying to squeeze their final naturally aspirated GT3s out before it's too late.

Lets see how this effects the value. According to most dealerships, The M3 has been more desirable.
