Yes, under the settings menu, where you can select what is displayed in the cluster, you can select to display the speed limit or not.

Very smart system .
True, and I probably should have clarified in my original response. I said it will read what is on the sign, meaning it can get fooled if it sees a sign that may not be applicable to the road your on. Sometimes I drive on side roads that have different speed limits that whats posted on the nearby highway (kinda a Texas thing). If the camera picks up the highway speed, even though I'm on the side/access road, it will display the highway speed. It's not smart enough to know you're not really on the highway even though it "saw" that sign, i.e. it will display exactly what the camera sees on the sign.

Regarding the unit conversion, yes, you're correct. I experienced this myself while on ED. It took me a while to figure out how to stop the actual speed and Speed Limit Info results from both showing mph vs. kmph. I ultimately settled on kmph for both.

Thanks, for only $350 it is probably a usefull option when you are traveling
in an area where you don't know the speed limit.I just wanted to make sure that it could be turned off,if I find it annoying to look at.

Personally, I don't find it annoying at all. It's small and on the side. There are a few roads that I travel regularly that have higher limits than I thought. This brought to my attention. I just wish idrive could interact with it so that I could set a speed limit warning of 15 above posted instead of being stuck with only one value. I normally have it set to 83, since that is around 80mph (I hate that our speedometer is full of crap).

If you live in a state like Virginia and driving in unfamiliar territory. It's worth it 10-folds.

Exactly why I did it. And being able to add it without the Driving Assistance Plus package was great as the other features I had no use for.

I'm getting it. The way the speed limits change so frequently and there's so many of them I figure it's worth it. And I know I'm usually speeding, I just want to know by how much if I happen to spot a cop and need to slow down. I can't always remember the last speed sign I saw.

My 10 year old e46 M3 has something like this, but I never use it. I can set a limit on my navigation and every time I cross the speed, it beeps. Pretty annoying actually. So I never set it.
My portable garmin does that. It knows the speed limits of the road based on gps and shows you the posted limit and then your speed right next to it. If you are driving legal the speed you are going is shown in green, but go over by one mile and it is red. It works perfectly and is actually useful, but the damn display is always RED.

The BMW one uses the camera to recognize the signs - so it works if they change the signs, or in temporary/work zones as well. I've used something similar in a Navigon app before and it was annoying - it had the wrong speed limit for I10, so I had to turn it's warnings off.

Used this on my ED trip and found it valuable. On daily drives it is a personal choice. As mentioned it is helpful in unfamiliar surroundings.

You can get it as a stand alone option but it has to be requested. It is option code 8TH that you must order.

Just had a loaner 5 series with the option. A lot more people have opted for the drivers assist package than i thought ( i personally thought it was a waste of money) so i was happy that i was able to test out the features and see what i was missing, esp the speed limit info feature. After just 15 minutes of driving, i found it to be a waste. As others have said, it needs to read the sign to get the speed limit. There were quite a few times where the limit displayed was wrong. Around me there are sections of the highway where the limit changes, but when I was passing through in the opposite lane of where the sign was posted, the sign wasnt read so the limit on the HUD didnt change. Same on local roads where it was blocked slightly by trees. It was a bit annoying when it kept displaying the wrong speed limit.

I personally think this feature, along with the other drivers assist features, is useless. Your eyes should be on the road anyways and its not that hard to read the speed limit signs, if you cant read it, the car cant either so whats the point?

If you are doing ED this option is very useful. It's a stand alone option at $350 for Canadians, and if I never use. It again after my ED trip it would have been worth it.

If anyone wants this as a stand alone option in the U.S. PM me and I will give you the contact at BMWNA to add it to your production number. I had no use for the other items in the package and took this route instead sine the speed info is projected in the HUD.

Are there any other options you can add a la carte like that, or just the 8TH?

I also found this extremely useful on my ED trip. In Europe, speeds change constantly and if there's a speed limit sign, even a temporary sign in a construction zone, the camera saw it. This would be similar to driving in an unfamiliar area in the US. You can see your speed right next to the speed limit, really hard to miss. I got a lot of experience using it in a very short amount of time, as we drove almost 3,000 miles in 15 days with my wife driving roughly have the time. It worked perfectly in multiple countries, namely Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, The Netherlands, and Belgium.

My ED trip was done with another M4, two M3s, and a bunch of M2s. The M2s don't have HUD. If you get the Executive Package this includes Speed Limit Info, but it's only shown in the instrument cluster display, not something that you're usually looking at while you're driving, and it apparently automatically converted it from kph to mph, not exactly helpful to compare to your speed. Both M4s and one M3 had the HUD and Speed Limit Display options. Most of the M2 drivers got tickets in Austria, and/or Stuttgart. None of the M3s/M4s got tickets.

Exactly. It definitely save me from many speeding tickets. Heck id say its worth it on its own if you were just planning to drive across Switzerland.

Honestly, i wouldnt have selected the option if I didnt do ED. It was purely for ED purposes.

Some of the people on this trip also did a group delivery in 2002. On that trip, one couple got a ticket in Switzerland for more than $300! Definitely worth it for Euro Delivery.
