Do you have the wireless charging/enhanced Bluetooth option? If so, text messages should appear after proper pairing with the car. If not, you'll need CarPlay or coding to activate the text message feature.

CarPlay doesn’t display texts, only read them to you.

Depends on your options. If you specced WiFi hotspot you also get Enhanced Bluetooth. Then it's just a case of going into your bluetooth menu (on the phone) and enabling "Show Notifications" then disconnecting and reconnecting to the car. Otherwise you're at a loss.

Even if you didn't spec wireless charging this can be added through coding. Add 6NS (or more appropriately change 6NH to 6NS) to your FA and code HU_NBT...then you will have an option to turn on "office" which will give you ability to read texts on screen just like in your 2015 (I came from a 2015 and liked that system WAY better than CarPlay). You can still use siri as well and ask to "read new messages" if you want them spoken to you. I just turned off CarPlay for good in my '18 and went this route. Just works. Reliably. Without crashing.

Also...if you have CarPlay you need to turn it off, otherwise BMW office will not be available to you...

Forgot to mention - if you have CarPlay and 6NS coded you can still turn CarPlay on and off without re-coding the car...just change settings in iDrive

BMW genius is saying that Apple blocks their text messages from everything that’s not CarPlay. Which is crap, because CarPlay is inferior to what BMW is doing imo. Anyone find a way around this?

2018? Do you have Enhanced Bluetooth/Wireless charging as referenced previously in the thread (or the appropriate coding to add the functionality)? Assuming so, you need to go under Communication ->Manage Mobile Devices-> Settings and ensure the Bluetooth option for "Office" is selected. Back up one page and select the name of your currently paired iPhone. Change that setting from "Apple CarPlay" to "BMW iDrive". Final thing I'd suggest is making sure "Show Notifications" is enabled on the actual iPhone under the Bluetooth connection for your vehicle. Restart the device and/or vehicle and test again.

Yes. 2018, equipped with enhanced Bluetooth. All the setting are enabled as you described, as well as enabled notifications. According to bmw the messaging isn’t compatible with iPhone... are you using an iPhone?

The BMW Geniuses are . . . well . . . not. Listen to the people here. We have iPhones. We have text messaging in our cars. Most of us do not have CarPlay (or if we do, we're not using it).

But to be sure . . . by "messaging", you're referring to text messages, not email messages, right?

Yes text messages. I’m going to pair another iPhone and see if I have the same problem. From what I see, all my settings seem to be correct.

So . . .
  • You've got Enhanced Bluetooth (you'll have a USB port under the HVAC dash controls)?
  • You've enabled Office in the iDrive menu?
  • You've paired your iPhone?
  • You've enabled Show Notifications in the iPhone Bluetooth menu by tapping the 'i' next to your BMW's connection?
Simple! You should be good to go . . . Good luck.

Well that's crazy. Hopefully someone else here will have another idea for you. Sorry I couldn't help more. Good luck.
